  1. ESCO implementations in Germany, best practices. Energy saving in schools in Neubrandenburg Kuno Schallenberg Holger Donle

  2. Insulation of Pipes • Installation of Thermostatic Valves • Installation of Regulation Systems • Updating of Regulation • … • Thermal Insulation of Walls • Installation of New Windows • Erection of Windmills • Solarfields • … • Teaching energy- responsible personal • Making a call to the users • Changing behavior • Rising awareness • … Basics: What are the Targets? Which Way to Go? Targets ES: O Energy Saving: Lowering Energy Consumption O Emission Saving: Lowering Environmental Pollution This Presentation: CSR and conscious behavior! In general: Ways to go (existing Buildings)! Investments No Investments CostLow CostNo Cost

  3. Why Energy Saving in Schools? Energy Saving in Schools • To lower the costs for education and teaching • To give new aspects, new knowledge to the pupils • Often it is easy to enthuse pupils • Identification with the school increases • Children take their experiences with them into their social environment and future

  4. What can be done? Most things are very simple. Some examples: • Avoid temperature regulation by opening the window • Only use parts of the lighting, mark the light switch • Shout down the lighting (in case of enough daylight or empty room) • Close the curtain only when darkness is needed; open it as fast as possible! • Do room temperatures fit to the use of the room (stockroom, toilet)? • Keep your eye on radiator valves, especially in rooms with different use • Record temperature daily, weekly. Is there a correct plot for night, weekend? • Some devices have “stand by” features. If possible, take them from the grid! • Light in the room: measurements of illumination, shut down single lamps

  5. Methods to motivate! Who pays the energy bill? In Germany mostly the municipality but: no money to save without pupils help! Situation in schools: • Budgets of schools are bounded to defined tasks • Seldom money for something special (like a school fête or a basketball) • Motivation: Share the economical profits between Municipality and schools (for example: 50% for the school, 50% for the municipality)

  6. Energy saving in schools in Neubrandenburg! The Project was called “Tut was!”, that means “Do something!” There were 19 schools with about 9.300 pupils to take part Age of the pupils was in between 6 and 20 years One complete year of measurement and rating! The project hits electrical energy, heat, water and rubbish The municipality and the schools made an agreement: The economical profits should be shared 30 % for the municipality 30 % for the schools 40 % for additional maintenance and repairing in schools

  7. Energy saving in schools in Neubrandenburg! First step: Define the starting point The consumption for all 4 resources for the last three years were collected Each data point was checked and, if necessary, changed Heat consumption was corrected because of different weather influences Average values were identified and documented After one year the “new” counter data were compared with average values!

  8. Results in Neubrandenburg

  9. Results in Neubrandenburg

  10. Results in Neubrandenburg All in all the pupils lowered the energy costs with nearly 103.400 € in one year!! All schools together got about 30.000 € Because of their different success they got from 0 € to 4.400 € They also lowered the emissions with an amount of 470 tons CO2e in one year!! To get savings of emissions with that amount you have to install nearly 850 kWPeak of photovoltaic in our area! That means, that investments of 3,8 Million € are necessary!

  11. Summary • The project showed, that it is possible to reduce the energy cost by 10%! Some of the project conditions lowered the effect, other municipal had higher results • There was no investment in technical advices, only into the education of pupils for example: investment in man power Pupils take there “investigations” with them into their life!! • ES in that case only works because of the contract between schools and municipality the results depend on the motivation!
