  2. GLOBALIZATION • Globalization is the term used to describe the global reduction in barriers to International Trade and movement of people in capital and trade. • This presentation is on Globalization and the impacts it has on Foods in the local industry.

Impact of Globalization on Foods • Food systems are transformed as a result of global economic and social changes. • Urbanization and Foreign Direct Investment in developing countries are prime facilitators in global changes. • Social Changes such as the increase in the number of women in the workforce has created a market for easily pre-cooked meals for working mothers to feed their family. • Health and Nutrition- these food systems and lifestyle changes impact on the health and nutrition of families who have shifted from a home prepared and home based meals to pre-prepared or ready to eat meals often consumed away from home. • Cultural Changes- social classes associated with each food product change through the influence of globalization.

Impact of Globalization on Foods • Globalization has opened up international markets to local producers and suppliers of food. • Greater Variety of foods are now available in local markets that were inaccessible before. • Seasonal goods are easily obtained all year around because it can be sourced from different markets across the globe. • Shared technology and expertise in food production processing and storing has emerged for food retailers.

Pros and Cons of Globalization Advantages Disadvantages • Resources of different countries are used for producing goods and services they are able to do most efficiently. • It promotes understanding and goodwill among different countries. • Adverse impact of fluctuations in agricultural productions in one area can be reduced by pooling of production of different areas. • Developed countries can stifle development of undeveloped and under-developed countries. • It can increase spread of communicable diseases. • Economic depression in one country can trigger adverse reaction across the globe.

  6. CONCLUSION Throughout history, Globalization has greatly impacted on the social, cultural, economical and technological aspects of a country. Food is intertwined as we see changes in society through the influence and impact on globalization. The sum of these changes has resulted in diverse foods that are available all year for those who can afford them as well as lifestyle changes in food systems. Globalization and free trade do spur economic growth and they lead to lower prices and access to many goods.
