Brain Power

Mind, Memory and Focus

Dr. Kimberly Balas

  • The adult brain weighs about 3 lbs - about 2% of body weight

  • It uses 25% of the body’s oxygen and as much as 20% of the blood’s sugar (about 400 calories per day)

  • The brain is 70% water

  • About 50% of the “dry” weight of the brain is fat - 35% of that is omega-3 fats

  • Contains billions of nerve cells - 98% of the nerve cells in the body

  • Plays roles in behavior, cognition, motivation, reward, sleep, mood, attention, sexuality and pleasure

  • Dopamine may also be involved in restless legs syndrome.

Parkinson s disease
Parkinson’s Disease

  • Caused by the degeneration of neurons which serve to connect the brain's motor system

  • Characterized by tremors, rigidity of the limbs, poor balance, and difficulty in initiating movements

  • Stimulating the production of dopamine alleviates symptoms

  • Involves hallucinations, delusions, and the disruption of normal, logical thought processes

  • Drugs which block activity of dopamine-related neurons reduce symptoms

  • Possible cause is overactivity of dopamine neurons

  • Characterized by excessive production of dopamine

  • Results in a person feeling “super human” and feeling like they can do anything

Alzheimer’s Disease

  • Caused by the degeneration of neurons that produce acetylcholine

  • High levels of aluminum have been found in the brains of Alzheimer’s patients

  • Caused by oxidative damage to the brain
