CICAS(From 12/9/04 presentation, Michael Schagrin, ITS JPO) • The program is 5 years in length with the expectation of addressing 4 problem areas • CICAS: A research, systems integration, and demonstration program • While the goal of the CICAS program is to develop deployable systems, it is not a deployment program • The expectation is that cooperative vehicle-infrastructure systems (in which wireless information is passed between the two) could significantly improve intersection safety • Take advantage of the US DOT Vehicle infrastructure Integration (VII) Program

  3. 4 Problem Areas: • Violation: • Sign and signal • Gap acceptance: • LTAP/OD (Urban signalized) • LTAP/LD (Rural unsignalized)

  4. Crossing Path Crash Types Left turn Right angle Right turn LTAP/OD: Left turn across path/ opposite direction LTAP/LD: Left turn across path/ lateral direction LTIP: Left turn into path RTIP: Right turn into path SCP: Straight crossing paths

  5. Leading to Field Operational Test • By 2009, plan to complete FOT activities for 4 problem areas using technology that is close to production ready • Establish the violation countermeasure first (stop sign and signal), and then build upon that foundation to establish a countermeasure for gap acceptance
