  2. Some Background on After The Wave… • a non-profit charity set-up by ISB faculty following the 2004 Tsunami. • Partnered with “The R35 School” in Khao Lak – the same school that ISB helped to rebuild through the Tsunami Relief Network. • “R35” = Raja-prajan-nukraw • (King’s Foundation for Supporting His People – school # 35) • ATW’s purpose is to provide financial support to those children still affected by the Tsunami – to ensure they are able to learn, and to bring themselves and their community out of poverty. The R35 school enrollment is approaching 1000 kids, and is growing – more and more of the kids in need are refugees from Burma or the south of Thailand. We’re expecting the number of children in need to increase with this growing enrollment. Plus, the “R35” school will be losing its “R” status. 3. What we do… • We work with faculty and admin at R35 to identify the kids in need. • Children who lost one or both their parents, or in other ways have been pushed into deeper poverty because of the Tsunami. • We find sponsors for these kids, raise funds, and oversee how the funds are applied. 100% of monies donated to sponsor students goes to that students account • We take ISB students to Khao Lak for friendship visits, and we bring R35 kids to Bangkok for the same reason. • We hold meetings to plan new events, update publications, brainstorm solutions, decide future directions, etc. etc. Faculty Presentation ISB May 2008 http://www.afterthewave.org

  4. The Children • Currently we have over 65 children in the program, ranging in age from 4 – 17. • Most sponsors are people here at ISB or their family, though we’re starting to see more overseas donations. • To date, we have raised over 800,000 Baht Faculty Presentation ISB May 2008 http://www.afterthewave.org

  5. Special Projects Funds • We also provide funds for special circumstances and eventual college enrollment – our commitment to these kids and the community is long term. • We also provide funds for emergency needs and medical procedures, for example…. Student ‘R’ We provided funds for “R” to have corrective surgery on her hand. The surgeon volunteers his expertise, we pay for the hospital, provide nursing support and offer R a place to stay when she is in Bangkok. This surgery will need to be repeated annually for the next several years Faculty Presentation ISB May 2008 http://www.afterthewave.org

  8. ISB Alumni • Involvement began during the past school term. • This resulted in the beginning of an after classes, Saturday and Sunday playtime activities program. • Art supplies, puzzles and toys have been donated and ISB alumni oversee the playtime activities as parents would if the children were at home. • Movies dubbed in Thai are shown most Sunday afternoons. • Personal involvement and interaction with the children is the goal. • Contact Maile McCoskrie Lindley 1967 graduate at isbmaile@sbcglobal.net for more information.
