  1. Sustainable Development Garry Lynch 09006817 Food Resilience Graph of food waste. Graph of transport Background World has been plunged into a global economic downturn. This has required Ireland to think of how to be more sustainable from a food perspective. Transport Ireland spends millions on food transport every year. Use more locally source product to reduce transport costs Packaging and storage Huge energy cost in the packaging and storage of food. Responsibility must be taken by the producer to reduce this factor. Food waste Huge amounts of waste due to poor planning by people, image 1. Government policy Grants for bio crops should be eliminated as they take land need for food production. A tax on un-used land should be introduced. Local markets Money should be invested in the setting up of local markets which would make areas much more sustainable. GM Food Unless large improvements are made in the technology it is not sustainable.
