  3. Your news story • Present a ‘hook’ or angle clearly in the title and in your first, concise paragraph • Always think of the reader: how can a story be developed to get them in? • Six words: ‘I want to tell you about’

  4. Apply the ‘so what?’ principle

  6. Your news story • Inverted pyramid: most important information first • Content: facts, and answering the 5Ws and one H • The ‘lead’ must grab attention and make the publicinterested by the first paragraph

  8. So what’s news? What’s news? 1: Hard news: facts, strong introduction and ‘descending order’ of news values; i.e. most important information at the top, least important information at the bottom • Hard news is usually on the first five pages of a paper • Big, bold headlines • ‘Major’ stories: • wars • murders • politics

  9. So what’s news? • 2: Soft news: often ‘human interest’ stories • Requires different writing treatment • Feature style or a ‘colour’ story • Sits beside hard news, often features photos • Stories about people, quirky events, animals

  10. Look for the human Look for the ‘human angle’ to any story. These are the stories audiences will connect with.
