  4. Consequences High Blood Pressure and Cholesterol Increased risk of impaired glucose tolerance, insulin resistance and DM2 Joint and musculoskeletal problems Fatty liver, gallstones, GERD Sleep Apnea, asthma Psychological

Hit you with statistics • Over 30% of kids 2-19 are overweight or obese (2007-2008 NHANES) • 16.9% are obese • 14.8% overweight • Physical activity among high school students hasn't changed over past 5 years, although computer time has increased • 1/3 of children's calorie intake is away-from-home food

  10. Conclusion Diabetes is a serious chronic illness that has the ability to affect quality of life at all points in the lifespan. Optimal blood sugar management is challenging, but we have many tools in our “toolbox” to help us maintain the balance of euglycemia. School personnel are KEY in BG management and promoting self-care skills (BG monitoring, insulin dosing, healthy behaviors) for children. Resources exist for school personnel: NDEP guidelines/templates, websites for carb counting, the child’s endocrinology team.
