  1. Implicit norm May be learned through instruction or observation Need not be stated Violations may bring social consequences Often part of customs Wait in line, don’t barge in or cut Don’t talk with your mouthful

  2. Explicit norm • Written down or formally communicated • Specific sanction of violated • Rules in school handbook • Laws

  3. Folkways • General standards of behavior, often of a group • Ordinary customs, loosely defined, loosely adhered to; implicit • Men wear pants, not skirts • Greetings • Food preparation • Decorating homes for holidays or celebrations

  4. Mores • Stricter control of moral/ethical behavior; explicit • Ten Commandments • Often upheld by laws - written set of guidelines that define right & wrong • Laws = formalized mores; serious repercussions if violated

  5. Taboos • Strictest norms; explicit • If violated - bring most serious sanctions • Dress code rules for women in fundamentalist Islamic cultures; punishable by whipping, branding, banishment, death • Incest; punishable as sexual abuse; violates social values, but more common than taboo suggests.

  6. Can you create new norms? • Yes - b/c cultures change • In response to changed conditions in society; econ or population changes (immigration) • Through cultural diffusion; instantaneous communication systems (spread of westernization, grass roots movements) • As result of innovation (modern conveniences & food preparation) • Imposed change (laws change)
