  2. Instant Challenge “Lingo” • IC= Instant Challenge • RCM= Regional Challenge Master (at the Regional level) • ACM= Affiliate Challenge Master (at the State level)

  3. Instant Challenge Basics • What is Instant Challenge? • Answer: A challenge that prompts teams to work on their feet to find a solution together. Teams have no prior knowledge about the challenge when they enter the room. This focuses on their creative problem solving ability. • Who will be in the Instant Challenge Room? • Answer: Two to three appraisers, team of two to seven members with at least two participating and up to five non-participating members (decided before they enter the room), and one team manager if the team would like. • How long will a single Instant Challenge last? • A single Instant Challenge will last five to twenty minutes. • When can we discuss our challenge? • After Global Finals in May! If you have any issues in the room that need to be addressed, please bring them up directly to your Regional Challenge Master for Instant Challenge.

  4. Why can’t we talk about our IC? • We ask that you do not talk about your Instant Challenge because each team who competes with the same central challenge at the same level receives the same Instant Challenge at their tournament.

  5. Can the teams be helped with their IC? • As with their central challenge, Instant Challenge must happen without interference. • This means appraisers and team managers in the room may not say they are doing something well or correctly. • Other things that constitute interference: recording, photography or note-taking by anyone in the room, as this may lead to sharing of the Instant Challenge.

  6. Can the teams be helped with their IC? • What if a team is operating under an obvious misconception? • It will be suggested to the team by the Head Appraiser that they re-read the challenge. • Can the team ask questions? • The team may ask any clarifying questions after time has begun. They will not receive answers to any questions that would validate a solution. • Can the team ask for time? • Yes. The team may ask for time at any point during the challenge. However, they may not ask for a reminder or warning.

  7. Team Questions • Only the head appraiser should answer questions. This helps lead to consistency in answers. • If one team received an answer to a question that is asked by another team in the same central challenge and at the same level later in the day, they must receive the same answer.

  8. Scoring Details • Scoring is done by appraisers independently, without discussion unless the scoring criteria is objective. • Examples: Clear yes or no completions, measurements and so on. If there is a discrepancy in scoring in a subjective case, the scoring always favors the team. • When sent to the score room, all objective scores must match up.

  10. Discussion Scenarios • Q: A team of seven team members enters the instant challenge room, however five of the team members are not participating in the Instant Challenge. How should you score team work? A: You should score based on the participating team members.

  11. Discussion Scenarios • Q: During lunch you over hear a team talking about one of the instant challenges at the tournament. What do you do? • A: Identify the team as well as you can. They should be wearing a team or town shirt. Ask them their names and team information if possible. Bring this issue up to your RCM immediately.

  12. Discussion Scenarios • Q: You’ve read through the Instant Challenge and before starting time a team member asks a question. How do you respond? • A: Ask the team to please hold all questions until the time has started.

  13. Discussion Scenarios • A: You are in a room with one other appraiser and you disagree on an objective scoring element. What should you do? • Q: If it is a measurement of some kind that can be re-checked, do so. If it is not, the scoring element is ruled in the favor of the team.

  14. Discussion Scenarios • Q: During the morning you notice that you will be appraising a team that your mother is the team manager for. What should you do? A: Bring this issue up to the RCM as soon as you know. If you know someone competing at the tournament, please let your RCM know ahead of time about this potential issue.

  15. Discussion Scenarios • Q: A team is extremely upset with how they did in Instant Challenge. Several members of the team are in tears after the timer goes off. What should you do? • A: Let them know that you enjoyed their performance and that they should not talk about their IC with anyone until after Global Finals, as you would all other teams. Bring the issue to the RCM’s attention immediately so that they may handle the situation further.

  16. Discussion Scenarios • Q: A team manager is upset with a particular ruling your appraisal team made while the team was solving the challenge. How do you handle this? A: Though this should not be a problem, as they are unaware of your scoring until after closing ceremonies, tell them that they should talk to your RCM.

  17. Discussion Scenarios • Q: A team asks you if you can provide them with a one minute warning, even though it does not explicitly state for you to do so in the challenge. How do you respond? • A: Tell the team that you cannot provide a warning, but that they may ask for time at any point during their challenge.
