  2. BACKGROUND: • School manager at Bridgton Secondary School • Situated in a township in Oudtshoorn • 1470 learners and staff establishment of 42 – with 2 ad hoc posts allocated for 2005 • Curriculum grade 9 to grade 12

  3. Background(cont.) • School is an Afrikaans medium school • Offers English as second language • German as third language • Offers 8 other subjects • None of them are practical subjects • Only 8 combinations to choose from

  4. 1994: Before Rationalization • 1453 learners • 13 subjects grade 10 – 12 • Staff establishment of 70 • 7 periods non-exam subjects • 5 day cycle • 49 periods per week • 25 combinations of subjects

  5. 1996 • Rationalization • 7 teachers declared in excess that year • Decided to phase out practical subjects * Reason: • Some of these teachers left (packages) • Inability of the infrastructure of the practical subjects to accommodate larger classes (numbers)

  6. 1996(cont.) • Poor results in these subjects • Dwindling number of learners taking these subjects • Subjects were too expensive to have • Neighboring school offered the subjects we phased out * Resulting in 13 subjects down to 9 * Number of learners increased to 1700

  7. 1997-1999 • Started using the facilities of SCTC • Pilot school with only grade 8 and 9 • 2000 learners in total on two premises • Pilot school developed into new school Bridgton Junior Secondary in 1999 • Only 8 combinations of subjects • 7 day cycle with 42 periods of 55 minutes

  8. After 1999 • 3 Learning areas • Science (3) 1. Maths; Physics; Biology;+ one of Geography/Accountancy/German • Commerce (2) 1. Economics; Bus.Econ; Accountancy; +1 of Biology/Maths

  9. Subjects (Continued) • Human Sciences/General (3) *History;Economics; Bus.Econ. + 1 of Biology/German *Geography;Economics;Bus.Econ; Biology • Combinations all qualified for Matriculation Exemptions in terms of groups • Biology not so popular

  10. FET • Decided not to apply for any new subjects to add to our curriculum • Lack of the necessary infrastructure • Cost of the infrastructure • Insufficient funds to finance governing body posts • Skills available on staff

  11. FET: Planning • Decided to stick to core subjects • 8 subjects can lead to 112 combinations • Very limited budget for SGB posts • 3 fields: Approved by staff • Natural Sciences: Two languages;LO; Maths; Life Science; Natural Science +1 of *German/Geography/Accountancy

  12. Combinations (Continued) • Commerce: Two languages; LO; Maths; Economics; Bus. Studies; Accountancy Two languages; LO; Math. Lit.; Economics; Bus. Studies + 1 of Accountancy/History/Geography/Life Sciences/German

  14. Time Allocation • Seven day cycle: 6 periods of 55 minutes each per day • 7 periods for Languages; Maths/Math Lit = 275 minutes per week • 3 periods for Life Orientation = 117,86 minutes per week • 6 periods per elective = 235,71 minutes per week • 3 periods- break-2 periods-break- 1 period

Possible hitches • Drastic changes to FET later in the year • The ability of FET to remove the bottle neck in grade 10 (25 % portfolio: 75 % end-of-year-exam?) • Mathematical Literacy compulsory – poor literacy and numeracy skills • Replacing Matriculation Exemption • Rigid structure of combinations

  16. Hitches (Continued) • Failures in grade 11 in 2006; what will happen to them in 2007? • Low parental involvement • Inclusive education with insufficient support services • Socio-economic problems • Parents expectations/ learners abilities

  17. Rules of combination – ANY 3 subjects from Group B – manageable? • Promotion requirements in remaining 3 subjects – interpretation • How foolproof is the Pace program?
