overturn the unfair Treaty of Versailles by legal means

10/1933 - Hitler withdraws Germany from the League of Nations

and makes public his desire to rearm Germany!

1935-36 – Germany establishes draft in March, 1935

- Appeasement Policy demonstrated that there was no

united front against Hitler, encouraged Germany to

occupy Rhineland in March, 1936.

- Mussolini of Italy invades Ethiopia, Hitler offers making

the Rome-Berlin Alliance 1935, Japan joins later.

- Fascists and Nazis support Franco in his Fascist

attack to overthrow the Spanish Republic, 1936

1938 - Hitler occupies Austria and the Sudetenland (Czech)

with British approval in Munich Pact, 9/38.

the “Nazi-Soviet Non-Aggression Pact” with Stalin.

9/1/39 – Germany invades Poland; Britain & France declare war,

press calls early months of war a “Phony War”.

1940 - The German “blitzkrieg” conquers Denmark, Norway,

Holland, Belgium, France – Battle of Dunkirk summer/40

- Battle of Britain in fall, 1940 prevents German invasion

of Britain.

1941 - Germany conquers Greece, Yugoslavia, Balkans.

- Germany attacks Soviet Union, leading to the Battle of

Stalingrad until 1/1943 = Stalin now joins the “Big Three”

or “The Grand Alliance”

- Japan attacks Pearl Harbor 12/7/41 due to U.S. oil and

steel embargo against Japan, begin “Europe First” plan.

  • German treatment of conquered lands was particularly brutal:

    • Areas were taxed and exploited heavily

      • Nordic regions received best treatment, French were tolerated (since not Aryan) and treatment was most brutal in the East (USSR).

    • POW treatment was harsh along with the “special” target

    • of Nazi Germany were the Jews and the Holocaust.
