  1. “How do you know it’s water baptism?”

  2. Why is this important? In AD 62, Paul writes… There is one body and one Spirit—just as you were called to the one hope that belongs to your call—one Lord, one faith, one baptism, (Ephesians 4:4-5, ESV) In AD 64, Peter writes… Baptism, which corresponds to this, now saves you, not as a removal of dirt from the body but as an appeal to God for a good conscience, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, (1 Peter 3:21, ESV) Soooo, which baptism is it ???

  3. In the beginning, baptism was in water Then Jerusalem and all Judea and all the region about the Jordan were going out to him, and they were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins. (Matthew 3:5-6, ESV) “I baptize you with water for repentance, but he who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. (Matthew 3:11, ESV) John baptized in water

  4. In the beginning, baptism was in water Now when Jesus learned that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus was making and baptizing more disciples than John (although Jesus himself did not baptize, but only his disciples),…  (John 4:1-2, ESV) Jesus’ disciples baptized in water

  5. Then along came Holy Spirit baptism… “I baptize you with water for repentance, but he who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. (Matthew 3:11, ESV) John prophesied that Jesus would do it

  6. Then along came Holy Spirit baptism… And while staying with them he ordered them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise of the Father, which, he said, “you heard from me; for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.” (Acts 1:4-5, ESV) Jesus promised it to His apostles But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, andto the end of the earth.” (Acts 1:8, ESV)

  7. Then along came Holy Spirit baptism… And I remembered the word of the Lord, how he said, ‘John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.’ (Acts 11:16, ESV) Household of Corneilus received it For they were hearing them speaking in tongues and extolling God. Then Peter declared, “Can anyone withhold water for baptizing these people, who have received the Holy Spirit just as we have?” And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they asked him to remain for some days. (Acts 10:46-48, ESV) Then received water baptism also

  8. In the beginning baptism was in water,Then along came Holy Spirit baptism… By AD 62 Paul was teaching there was ONLY one baptism. Which was it? Water, or Spirit?

  9. What is the difference between… H.S. baptism is administered by Jesus “I baptize you with water for repentance, but he who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.  (Matthew 3:11, ESV)

  10. What is the difference between… And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. And divided tongues as of fire appeared to them and rested on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance.  Acts 2:2-4, ESV) H.S. baptism is administered by Jesus “I baptize you with water for repentance, but he who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.  (Matthew 3:11, ESV)

  11. What is the difference between… As I began to speak, the Holy Spirit fell on them just as on us at the beginning. And I remembered the word of the Lord, how he said, ‘John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.’ If then God gave the same gift to them as he gave to us when we believed in the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I that I could stand in God's way?”  (Acts 11:15-17, ESV) H.S. baptism is administered by Jesus

  12. What is the difference between… Water baptism is administered by men H.S. baptism is administered by Jesus Now when Jesus learned that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus was making and baptizing more disciples than John (although Jesus himself did not baptize, but only his disciples),  (John 4:1-2, ESV) And as they were going along the road they came to some water, and the eunuch said, “See, here is water! What prevents me from being baptized?” And he commanded the chariot to stop, and they both went down into the water, Philip and the eunuch, and he baptized him.  (Acts 8:36-38, ESV)

  13. What is the difference between… And while staying with them he ordered them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise of the Father, which, he said, “you heard from me; for John baptized with water, but you will be baptizedwith the Holy Spirit not many days from now.” (Acts 1:4-5, ESV) H.S. baptism was a promise to the apostles

  14. What is the difference between… Water baptism was commanded of all disciples H.S. baptism was a promise to the apostles For they were hearing them speaking in tongues and extolling God. Then Peter declared, “Can anyone withhold water for baptizing these people, who have received the Holy Spirit just as we have?” And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they asked him to remain for some days.  (Acts 10:46-48, ESV) And now why do you wait? Rise and be baptized and wash away your sins, calling on his name.’  (Acts 22:16, ESV)

  15. What is the difference between… For they were hearing them speaking in tongues and extolling God. Then Peter declared, “Can anyone withhold water for baptizing these people, who have received the Holy Spirit just as we have?” And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they asked him to remain for some days. (Acts 10:46-48, ESV) H.S. baptism came with power But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”  (Acts 1:8, ESV)

  16. When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. (John 16:13, ESV) And they went out and preached everywhere, while the Lord worked with them and confirmed the message by accompanying signs.]] (Mark 16:20, ESV) …how shall we escape if we neglect such a great salvation? It was declared at first by the Lord, and it was attested to us by those who heard, while God also bore witness by signs and wonders and various miracles and by gifts of the Holy Spirit distributed according to his will. (Hebrews 2:3-4, ESV)

  17. What is the difference between… Water baptism came for repentance H.S. baptism came with power And Paul said, “John baptized with the baptism of repentance, telling the people to believe in the one who was to come after him, that is, Jesus.”  (Acts 19:4, ESV)

  18. What is the difference between… Water baptism came for repentance H.S. baptism came w/out regard to salvation Already you are clean because of the word that I have spoken to you.(John 15:3, ESV)

  19. What is the difference between… Water baptism came at the point of a new life H.S. baptism came w/out regard to salvation We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life. For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his.  (Romans 6:4-5, ESV)

  20. What is the difference between… H.S. baptism came to reveal/confirm truth But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name,he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.  (John 14:26, ESV) And they went out and preached everywhere, while the Lord worked with them and confirmed the message by accompanying signs.  (Mark 16:20, ESV)

  21. What is the difference between… Water baptism commanded till end of age H.S. baptism came to reveal/confirm truth Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”  (Matthew 28:19-20, ESV) one Lord, one faith,  one baptism, (Ephesians 4:5, ESV)

  22. How can we know it’s water baptism? • Was it commanded by the Lord? • Administered by men? • A sign of repentance? • And salvations new life? • The only one intended to last through the ages?
