ECTOPIC PREGNANCY. DEFINITION It is when a fertilized ovum gets implanted in an area other than the uterine cavity.  INCIDENCE  1-3% of clinical pregnancies.  10-15 % of all ectopic pregnancies occur after IVF. INCIDENCE:. 1-3% of clinical pregnancies.

  1. ECTOPIC PREGNANCY • DEFINITION • It is when a fertilized ovum gets implanted in an area other than the uterine cavity. •  INCIDENCE •  1-3% of clinical pregnancies. • 10-15 % of all ectopic pregnancies • occur after IVF.

  3. ETIOLOGY • 1 TUBAL ABNORMALITIES • Developmental errors • Distortion of the tube. • Previous PID • Tubal surgery • Inefficient tubal contractions or poor cilial action. • Inadequate corpus luteum

  4.  ENDOCRINE DISORDERS Delayed ovulation Ovulation induction drugs ZYGOT ABNORMALITIES

  5. SYMPTOMS • Amenorrhoea •  Pain • Irregular bleeding P/V • Syncope • Uterine cast

  6. SIGNS • Abdominal tenderness • Adnexal tenderness • Adnexal mass • Uterine changes • Fever

  7. LABORATORY FINDINGS • Pregnancy test • Haematocrit • White blood count is raised • Reticulocyte • Serum amylase

  8. SPECIAL EXAMINATION • Ultrasound • Laparoscopy • Culdocentesis • Laparotomy

  9. COMPLICATIONS Maternal death Chronic salpingitis Infertility

  10. TREATMENT • Immediate surgery & transfusion with • whole blood or blood components. • Laparoscopy------laser surgery • Methotrexate-----in early un ruptured ectopic with careful beta HCG monitoring • Broad spectrum antibiotics
