  3. Balderdash There are a number of words which Mark Twain uses which you may not understand the meaning of. Also, Twain’s character Tom often uses words or terms in a way defined by his understanding or interpretation. It is useful for you to understand that some novels provide a word bank to define words (such as Old Scratch = devil) and their meaning at the time of the novel’s publication.

  4. Balderdash count off 1-8 Each group will receive a word from Tom Sawyer and the page (approximate) where that word is located. Each group will have 6 minutes to construct a definition for their word and a picture to accompany their definition. Have one person (scribe) write the definition on one side of the poster in large letters. This definition must be the consensus of the group. Another member of the group draws a picture on the other side of the poster to represent their word. A third member of the group will then act as the speaker for the group. Have students decide who will draw and who will present.

  5. Balderdash Old Scratch (4) Éclat (25) Caitiff (54) Rip (59) Verdi grease (64) Hy’roglyphics (138) Earnest (186) Ransom (187)

  6. Balderdash You have 6 minutes to complete the definition and picture Then, take turns to show the class your picture Have the other students try to guess the word depicted in the drawing. Then have the presenter tell the class your word and flip your poster over and read the definition
