  1. Changes in MatterPhysical & Chemical Changes Slide Show #2

  2. Chemistry • The study of the properties of matter and how matter changes.

  3. Physical Property Any characteristic of a material that can be observed without changing the identity of the materials itself. • Color • Texture • Temperature • Density • Boiling Point • Melting Point • Thermal & Electrical Conductivity

  4. Chemical Property • Properties that can change matter. Only observable during a chemical reaction. • Flammability • Reactivity • Ability to tarnish

  5. Physical Changes • Alters form or appearance of a material. • No new substance is formed!!!! Examples: Even though it is changing phase you still have water! (H2O)

  6. Examples of Physical Changes

  7. Chemical Change • Matter changes to produce a NEW substance. • Elements are now in different combinations.

  8. A good way to tell the difference. Physical Change Stampedes  Stampedes same word, different font. Chemical Change Stampedes  Made + Steps scrambling word to make new words

  9. How can you tell if a new substance is produced? • Sometimes a gas is produced. (bubbles) • Sometimes a color change occurs. • Sometimes heat is produced. • Other times, a solid is produced when two solutions are mixed • We call this a precipitate.

  10. Chemical Reactions • Chemical reactions occur when chemical bonds are either formed or broken apart!
