What is the NQF Classification System • The Dewey Classification System gives consistent ‘order’ to libraries – it is easy to find books, or put them back on the shelves • The NQF Classification System does the same thing for the NQF – it gives ‘order’ to a “library” made up of qualifications rather than books • But, it is more than just a cataloguing system

  3. Why a NQF Classification System? • Promotes consistency in the terms used to describe the subject area(s) covered by any qualification – consistency in naming qualifications • Allows qualifications and unit standards to be placed in an orderly location on the NQF • Helps people locate qualifications or unit standards on the NQF that may be of interest • Assists providers to describe the scope of services for which they want accreditation • Assists qualification developers to describe flexible attainment options within a qualification • Enables qualification attainment data sharing at a national, regional and international level

Adding NEW items – Questionsneeding Answers • Do the new items describe an area of learning? • Are the new items sensible and logical in terms of where they are to be placed on the Classification System? • Would the items make useful names for qualifications? • Would people think of these terms if they were looking for a qualification on the NQF?

  12. Changing or deleting items • Would the change or deletion: • Leave registered unit standards without a ‘home’? • Make any registered qualification unobtainable? • Dis-accredit any accredited provider? An IMPACT REPORTmust be provided to guide management of the changes within the NQF
