What is Religion? • Core component of culture • Relatively structured set of beliefs and practices through which people seek mental and physical harmony with the powers of the universe • Attempt to accommodate and influence the forces of nature, life, and death • Help people make sense of their place in the world

Classifying Religions • Proselytic – actively seeking new members and aim to convert • Monotheistic – belief in one god, where as polytheistic – belief in many gods • Syncretic religions – combine elements of two or more different belief systems • Orthodox religion – emphasize purity of faith and not open to blending with elements of other belief systems
