  1. Proverbs 8

  2. Proverbs 8Wisdom Personified

  3. Wisdom is available • (Prov 8:1-2 NKJV) Does not wisdom cry out, And understanding lift up her voice? {2} She takes her stand on the top of the high hill, Beside the way, where the paths meet.

  4. Where the paths meet. • Does not this mean the house of public worship? the tabernacle or temple, which stands a center to the surrounding villages, the paths from all the parts leading to and terminating at it? In such a place, where the holy word of God is read or preached, there in a particular manner does wisdom cry, and understanding lift up her voice. There are the warnings, the precepts, and the promises of eternal truth; -- Adam Clarke

  5. I am easy to find. • (Prov 8:3-4 NKJV) She cries out by the gates, at the entry of the city, At the entrance of the doors: {4} "To you, O men, I call, And my voice is to the sons of men.

  6. Wisdom and Wickedness are opposites • (Prov 8:5-7 NKJV) O you simple ones, understand prudence, And you fools, be of an understanding heart. {6} Listen, for I will speak of excellent things, And from the opening of my lips will come right things; {7} For my mouth will speak truth; Wickedness is an abomination to my lips.

  7. Wisdom & righteousness go together • (Prov 8:8-9 NKJV) All the words of my mouth are with righteousness; Nothing crooked or perverse is in them. {9} They are all plain to him who understands, And right to those who find knowledge.

  8. For wisdom is better than wealth • (Prov 8:10-11 NKJV) Receive my instruction, and not silver, And knowledge rather than choice gold; {11} For wisdom is better than rubies, And all the things one may desire cannot be compared with her.

  9. The Contrast between good & Evil • (Prov 14:11 NKJV) The house of the wicked will be overthrown, But the tent of the upright will flourish.

  10. Wisdom and prudence • (Prov 8:12 NKJV) "I, wisdom, dwell with prudence, And find out knowledge and discretion.

  11. Wisdom and prudence • I wisdom dwell with prudence - Prudence is defined, wisdom applied to practice; so wherever true wisdom is, it will lead to action, and its activity will be always in reference to the accomplishment of the best ends by the use of the most appropriate means. -- Adam Clarke

  12. The fear of the LORD • (Prov 8:13 NKJV) The fear of the LORD is to hate evil; Pride and arrogance and the evil way And the perverse mouth I hate. • (Psa 111:10 NKJV) The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom; A good understanding have all those who do His commandments. His praise endures forever.

  13. Wisdom needed for accomplishment • (Prov 8:14-16 NKJV) Counsel is mine, and sound wisdom; I am understanding, I have strength. {15}By me kings reign, And rulers decree justice. {16} By me princes rule, and nobles,All the judges of the earth.

  14. It takes seeking on our part. • (Prov 8:17 NKJV) I love those who love me, And those who seek me diligently will find me. • (Mat 7:7-8 NKJV) "Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. {8} "For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened.

  15. Seek or get lost! • (Isa 53:6 NKJV) All we like sheep have gone astray; We have turned, every one, to his own way; And the LORD has laid on Him the iniquity of us all.

  16. Wisdom is better than riches • (Prov 8:18-19 NKJV) Riches and honor are with me, Enduring riches and righteousness. {19} My fruit is better than gold, yes, than fine gold, And my revenue than choice silver.

  17. We need to love wisdom • (Prov 8:20-21 NASB) "I walk in the way of righteousness, In the midst of the paths of justice, {21} To endow those who love me with wealth, That I may fill their treasuries.

  18. God has always had wisdom • (Prov 8:22 NKJV) "The LORD possessed me at the beginning of His way, Before His works of old.

  19. Wisdom is Part of God’s Nature • “The Lord possessed me in the beginning of his way” - Wisdom is not acquired by the Divine Being; man, and even angels, learn it by slow and progressive degrees; but in God it is as eternally inherent as any other essential attribute of his nature. -- Adam Clarke

  20. Wisdom is Eternal • (Prov 8:23-24 NKJV) I have been established from everlasting, From the beginning, before there was ever an earth. {24} When there were no depths I was brought forth, When there were no fountains abounding with water.

  21. Wisdom and God are eternal • (Prov 8:25 NKJV) Before the mountains were settled, Before the hills, I was brought forth; • (Prov 8:23 NKJV) I have been established from everlasting, (Psa 90:2 NKJV) Before the mountains were brought forth, Or ever You had formed the earth and the world, Even from everlasting to everlasting, You are God.

  22. Wisdom – Just part of God! • (Prov 8:26-28 NKJV) While as yet He had not made the earth or the fields, Or the primeval dust of the world. {27} When He prepared the heavens, I was there, When He drew a circle on the face of the deep, {28} When He established the clouds above, When He strengthened the fountains of the deep,

  23. The Design of the World! • (Prov 8:29-30 NKJV) When He assigned to the sea its limit, So that the waters would not transgress His command, When He marked out the foundations of the earth, {30} Then I was beside Him as a master craftsman; And I was daily His delight, Rejoicing always before Him,

  24. Wisdom is behind God’s creation • (Prov 8:31 NKJV) • Rejoicing in His inhabited world, • And my delight was with the sons of men.

  25. The Importance of Wisdom • (Prov 8:32-33 NKJV) "Now therefore, listen to me, my children, For blessed are those who keep my ways. {33} Hear instruction and be wise, And do not disdain it.

  26. Put forth the effort! • (Prov 8:34-35 NKJV) • Blessed is the man who listens to me, • Watching daily at my gates, • Waiting at the posts of my doors. • {35} For whoever finds me finds life, • And obtains favor from the LORD;

  27. The Hebrew writer agrees • (Heb 2:1 KJV) Therefore we ought to give the more earnest heed to the things which we have heard, lest at any time we should let them slip.

  28. To have life, we must seek it! • (Prov 8:36 NKJV) But he who sins against me wrongs his own soul; All those who hate me love death." • (John 14:6 NKJV) Jesus said to him, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.

  29. "He who would love life” • (1 Pet 3:10-12 NKJV) For "He who would love life And see good days, Let him refrain his tongue from evil, And his lips from speaking deceit. {11} Let him turn away from evil and do good; Let him seek peace and pursue it. {12} For the eyes of the LORD are on the righteous, And His ears are open to their prayers; But the face of the LORD is against those who do evil."

  30. Accentuate the Positive, Eliminate the Negative. • (2 Pet 3:17-18 NKJV) You therefore, beloved, since you know this beforehand, beware lest you also fall from your own steadfastness, being led away with the error of the wicked; {18} but grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To Him be the glory both now and forever. Amen.
