  1. In the water Chapter 5 Animals in Danger

  2. River Dolphins

  3. baiji dolphin species • lives in the Yangtze (Chang Jiang) River in China • 1950´s = 6,000 baijis • they hear very well and talk to other dolphins • in past they heard small ships and swam under

  4. Dangers to the baiji • big ships on the river and other noisesare a danger • baiji´s hit head on big ships • towns and factories pollute the river making the water dirty and hard for the baiji to see • the construction of the Three Gorges Dam changed the habitat

  5. Trying to help the baiji • in 1983 the Chinese stopped hunting river dolphins • built a special habitat in the river • it was expensive to build the habitat so to earn money the govermnet sold the “baiji” name. Results= baiji drink, baiji hotel, baiji shoes • only some of the money helped the dolphins

  6. Did it help? • 1990 = 200 baiji found in 2,000 kilometres of the Yangtze River • 2004=2 found in the river by scientists • Succesful????? I think NO!!!!

  7. River dolphins in the Ganges Riverin India and Bangladesh

  8. Why are the river dolphins in the Ganges River in danger? • 10% of the world´s population live near this river so it is very polluted • dolphins can´t move up and down the river because of dams • now= 4,000 river dolphins remain in the Ganges River BUT THEY ARE IN DANGER OF EXTINCTION!!!!!

  9. Sea Dolphins

  10. Sea Dolphins • live in nearly every sea of the world • people eat their meat • hundreds of thousands die because they are caught in fishing nets • fishing takes away the sea dolphins food

  11. Killer Whales (speciesi n dolphin family) • live 50-80 years in sea but only 10 years in a zoo • they like cold water • their ONLY danger is humans!! • pollution goes to sea and kills the whales and whales eat polluted fish and get ill (sick) • hunting is a danger >> The Inuit of Alaska hunted killer whales in the past but only a small number • after, hunters from other countries with big ships came to hunt the killer whales

  12. Blue Whales of Antartica

  13. Blue whales • Biggest whale in the world • Live 90 years • 1900 = 250,000 • 1930-1931 hunters killed 30,000 • Today = 5,000 DANGER OF EXTINCTION

  14. OTHER SPECIES OF WHALES -other species of whales are disappearing -most countries stopped killing whales but some still do -it is hard to protect the whale far out in the big, big sea
