  2. 2 2 8 Places In The News ▶Reading Comprehension South Sudan-historic referendum for independence From Jan. 9-15, 2011, a historic referendum was held in South Sudan, currently part of Sudan -the largest country in Africa. The South Sudanese will decide whether to remain unified or become independent from the north. The south will become a new nation in six months if it registers a majority vote. In a 2005 treaty, South Sudan agreed to end decades of civil war between north and south Sudan. Controlled by the Southern Sudanese autonomous government, the territory is also called Southern Sudan or New Sudan. The name, Sudan, originates from the Arabic Bilad-al-Sudan, meaning land of the blackened. It is surrounded by Ethiopia to the east, the Central African Republic to the west, the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the south. To the north there are Arab and Muslim regions under the control of the central government. Its official languages are Arabic and English. With oil reserves, Southern Sudan may become a new oil-producing country if the South Sudanese decide to secede from the north. Or it may also be the poorest country in the world due to a 22-year-long civil war. There are 6 billion barrels of estimated oil deposits in Sudan. About 70 percent of them are in South Sudan. Sudan’s president, Omar al-Beshir, has stated he will accept the vote, whatever the result is. But many people are worrying about another war, which is likely to break out for an oil region, Abia. Although South Sudan is on the way to independence with various problems, the majority of South Sudanese seem eager to secede from the north. As most South Sudanese are illiterate, South Sudan adopted picture ballots. In a ballot, a picture of two hands clasping means unity, one held up symbolizes secession. The Sudan People’s Liberation Army (SPLM), from the rebel south and supported by some Christians, reached a peace deal with the Islamic government in the north. South Sudan agreed to vote for independence after six years in the 2005 treaty. ☞ Choose the best answer based on the article.
