  2. Election of 1864 • Why should Lincoln worry? • 9 presidents in a row had only served one term • Emancipation scared some northerners • Union war effort was dismal • Rising support for “Peace Democrats”

  3. Tide of war shifts • McClellan was running as a Democrat that ran on the platform that sought peace(compromise) • Sherman seizes Atlanta in September of 1864  Lincoln now sees a light at the end of the tunnel • November, Lincoln wins popular vote and electoral(212-21)

  5. Results • NJ, Kentucky, and Delaware • NJ legislature was Democratic, not all were Copperheads • Copperhead HQ Hackensack, NJ • Election of 1864 unified the North(Union)  within a year Union would win the war.

  6. House was bought by William McLean in 1863. McLean moved from Manassas, VA It is said the war started in his front yard and ended in his front parlor

  8. Terms of Surrender • Attendance is taken  to make sure no soldiers fighting take up arms against the Union again • Weapons are turned over • The men can go back to their homes
