STEM: Brown University (cont’d) • The Artemis Project • five-week summer program • directed by four undergraduate women at Brown University • introduces rising 9th-grade girls to computer science, targeting them at the critical age when the disparity between males and females in the sciences becomes most pronounced. • The program is free • students have the option to obtain free RIPTA bus passes • lunch is provided every day • http://www.cs.brown.edu/orgs/artemis/2012/about.html

  7. STEM to STEAM Proposal STEM to STEAM workshop at McCourt Format: -9 a.m. – 1 p.m. on a Saturday -not a teacher-run event -run by volunteers who are engineering majors from URI and professional engineers in community -Number of students is dependent on the number of workshops offered

STEM to STEAM Proposal: What would the workshop look like? • 8:30 – 9:00 a.m. registration/check-in • 9:00 – 9:15 welcome (whole group in cafe) • 9:20 – 10:55: Session I • 11– 12:30: Session II • 12:30 – 1:00 pm: Closing Remarks and resources Select 2 Workshops (in Classrooms) • Chemical Engineering: create a potato rocket • Mechanical Engineering: Aviation—create a balsa wood airplane • Physics: Spaghetti Bridge competition • Technology: Hacking • Art to Physics Egg Drop Competition: create an aesthetically pleasing & functional container for an egg drop competition
