Yesterday’s Meetings

- Cell Phones/Headphones: None out after bell rings. Not even on your desk or lap.

Objectives

- You should be able to find graph vertical parabolas including:
- Vertex Point
- Axis of Symmetry (AOS)
- Focus Point
- Directrix Line
- Length of Latus Rectum (LR)

- Complete the Square to obtain vertex Format

What is a conic section?

- A conic is simply the intersection of a plane and a double-cone.
- 4 common conics are the parabola, circle, ellipse, and hyperbola shown below:

Parabola

- A parabola is a set of points in a plane that are all the same distance from a given point called the focus and the same distance from a line called the directrix.
- A parabola is formed when we slice through one end of a double cone an an angle.

Parabola

- A parabola is a set of points in a plane that are all the same distance from a fixed line called the directrix and a fixed point not on the line called the focus .

Key Concept

- The distance from Vertex Point to Focus Point is “p”
- This is also the same distance from Vertex Point to the Directrix Line

When graphing you MUST label…

- vertex
- focus
- directrix
- axis of symmetry
- endpoints of the latus rectum

Where to find them…

- FOCUS: inside the parabola
- DIRECTRIX: outside of the parabola
- AOS: through the vertex, perpendicular to the directrix
- FOCAL CHORD (latus rectum): inside of the parabola

Examples

- Graph and find equation examples done in packet of notes together in class.

Homework

- Finish examples in Packet of notes
- WS 8-3 Vertical Parabolas
