  1. The Wrightbrothers By: Aarica

  2. The Beginning of Wright Brothers • Wilbur Wright was born near Millville, Indiana on April 16, 1867. Orville Wright was born in Dayton, Ohio, August 19, 1871. • In 1878, when Orville and Wilbur were ages 7 and 11, their father brought them a toy helicopter. • During the next few years, Wilbur and Orville tried to build these themselves, but the bigger they made them the less well they flew. Somewhat discouraged, the brothers turned to kites.

  3. The Wright Brothers • In 1889, with Wilbur's help, Orville designed and built a printing press, and the brothers began making a weekly and then an everyday paper.

  4. Experimenting • The Wright Brothers wondered about air transportation. • The brothers began their experimenting flight in 1896 at their bicycle shop in Dayton, Ohio. • Moved to Kitty Hawk, North Carolina to continue their experimentation.

  5. The Wright Brothers - Gliders • “Over the next three years, Wilbur and his brother Orville would make a series of gliders which would be flown in both unmanned and piloted flights.” (Bellis, M) • Following a successful plane test, the Wrights built and tested a bigger plane. They chose Kitty Hawk, North Carolina as their test site because of its wind, sand, hilly areas and location.

  6. Successful • In 1900, the Wrights successfully tested their new 50-pound biplane glider with its 17-foot wingspan and wing-warping mechanism at Kitty Hawk, in both unmanned and piloted flights.

  7. First in Flight • The brothers built a movable track to help launch the plane. • This downhill track would help the aircraft gain enough airspeed to fly. • After two tries to fly this plane, one of which resulted in a little crash, Orville Wright took the plane for a 12-second, sustained flight in December 1903. • This was the first successful, powered, piloted flight in history.
