When your daughter begins at Turves Green…. It is a big place to travel around compared to Primary school! We want to help her travel successfully so she is issued with a passport to help her identify and articulate skills that we use across the curriculum.

  1. When your daughter begins at Turves Green… • It is a big place to travel around compared to Primary school! • We want to help her travel successfully so she is issued with a passport to help her identify and articulateskills that we use across the curriculum.

  3. It contains fun personal details e.g. glue a picture and draw yourself in the new uniform! It is linked with; -the mascot -the rewards system -PSE lessons where the activities at the back of the booklet will be completed. MAIN FOCUS= Each subject rewards the girls for using 12 skills. 1.   4. What are the skills I need to use? Sorting out and planning things before you do them. 1. Organisational skills The skills are divided up into 12 separate sections on page 3 and have a ‘pupil speak’ explanation so the girls know what each skill really means… Using an aid to help you outline the most important information then putting that into written work. 2. Application Looking at a lot of information but take the main/ important parts from it. 3. Analysis 4. Research skills Finding out information using lots of different sources e.g. books, TV, internet. 5. Team work Being able to work with other people. 6. Communication skills Being able to put across your ideas using special vocabulary

  5. 7. Listening skills Not just hearing what people say. Listening means you think about and maybe act on what people say. The skills are used across the whole school in each subject! 8. Problem Solving Giving ideas to solve (answer) any problems. Giving an opinion but supporting it with a reason. 9. Reasoning Skills Sharing your ideas with others. 10. Presentation Skills Marking my own and other people’s work so I know what I did well and how to improve. 11. Evaluation Going over work and bringing it together. Using fun activities to help me remember important work. 12. Synthesis

  6. EXAMPLE of skills in action… • On page 4 • The Humanities Department (History, Geography and RE) introduce the skills in lessons…

  7. BRONZE Remember – you must collect 30Bronze stars/ stamps/ stickers from your History, Geography and R.E teachers to show that you have learnt and rehearsed the skills for this award! 4 /36 Bronze award= 10 reward points to spend at the school shop! If you get 30 you can get a Bronze award!

  8. In R.E we introduce listening skills At the end of the lesson your daughter receives a signature, stamp or sticker to show she has used this skill correctly. Can you express good listening skills like your daughter?

  9. 1 min • Task • Someone on your table needs to explain the Story of Moses(your daughter should be able to do this from RE!) • - Everyone else on the table needs to show they are NOT listening.

Story of Moses help! • Born to Hebrew (Jewish) parents • Placed in basket on river to get away from Pharaoh who was killing Hebrew baby boys. • Found by Pharaoh's wife and adopted • Moses found out he was really a Hebrew when he was older • Accidently killed a man then ran away • Communicated with God who told him to return to Egypt and release the Hebrews from slavery • The Pharaoh refused to let the Hebrews go • Moses sent 10 plagues from God • The Pharaoh agreed the Hebrews could leave • Then the Pharaoh changed his mind • Moses parted the red sea • The Pharaoh was killed but the Hebrews escaped.

  14. Rewards Do you think you have earned the sticker? Collecting the stickers turns into Bronze, Silver and Goldawards, prizesand merit points that can be spent in the school shop!

  15. The passport to the school and to the future… • We want your daughter to know and understand the skills she possess now and in her future for further education or the career she chooses! I have to use my listening skills on site else it could be dangerous! At interview I made sure my boss knew I was a good listener- he said that was one reason why I got the job!

Quest! • Students are encouraged to research questions about each school subject in Challenge 1. • Next students have to find out and collect evidence for Challenge 2. • This was completed as the 1st half term’s classwork/ homework in PSE. • It encourages students to use a wide variety of locations to research information.

A massive help… • Perhaps encourage your daughter to use ‘skills language’ when describing her day e.g. ‘I presented to class and used my communication skills.’ • Perhaps check whether your daughter received any stickers for skills that day. • Perhaps ask which skills your daughter is using to complete a piece of homework.
