  1. Optical networking TF-NGN, Athens October 16th, 2001 Victor Reijs Optical networking

  2. Aim of session • Status update… • Brainstorm on ‘lambda switching’… Optical networking

  3. Outline • Possible European optical testing • Wrapper technology: G.709... • Brainstorm on ‘lambda switching’... Optical networking

  4. G.709: Robert Optical networking

  5. Brainstorm on ‘lambda switching’ • Lambda workshop in Amsterdam • http://www.terena.nl/conf/lambda/programme.html • New way of thinking: consume bandwidth • radical new applications (such as a link as a storage device) • work together with e.g. grid computing initiatives • user controlled bandwidth Optical networking

  6. Real lambda switching is far off • The only standard is ITU-T grid • For lambda interoperability no standards on: • Laser modulation • Spectrum width • Power levels • Bandwidth: OC-48, OC-192, ... • Dispersion management • Work on this to help resolve these issues Optical networking

  7. Possible set ups Optical switch: Switching/changing colors Protocol transparent Power sensitive Router/switch: Transponding colors Not protocol transparent Cross bar: Transponding colors Protocol transparent Optical networking

  8. Some ideas (1, Users) • User not particularly interested in lambda's, but in bandwidth • Virtual path can be a lambda, GE, STS, etc. • Virtual paths managed by user: • desk to desk? • computer center to computer center? • Provide (some?) user more capabilities to make networks according to his/her needs Optical networking

  9. Some ideas (2, ATM) • Don’t fall in the ATM trap of 10 years ago. • What is really new from ATM times? • ATM: (34 Mbit/s) 155 Mbit/s - 2.5 Gbit/s (5x, 16x) • WDM: (622 Mbit/s) 2.5 -> 40 Gbit/s (4x, 16x) • More evolved standards and more experience: • RSVP, Tag/MPLS(-TE/FRR) switching, GMPLS • Multi homing, how common and wanted is it (routing loops)? • (S)PVC’s can do the job, instead of SVC’s Optical networking

  10. Some ideas (3, CPE) • No multiple lambda interface, but multiple GE(/SONET) interfaces in CPE • No reuse of unused bandwidth within lambda • Waste of bandwidth? • User managed bandwidth only provided within IP layer • Inter domain routing is important for NREN community: • GMPLS (intra domain, inter domain later) • OBGP (starting with inter domain) Optical networking

  11. Some ideas (4, Optical net.) • For optical networking OEO is normally needed • In optical WAN one needs per lambda 3R (regeneration, retiming, reshaping) • G.709 could make it framing independent • In MAN framing transparency looks to be possible • Interworking WAN (DWDM), MAN (CWDM) and LAN (GE)? Optical networking

  12. Some ideas (5, Services) • Virtual paths for internal ISP bandwidth provision • intra domain • Virtual paths between ISP’s (at peering points) • inter domain • Virtual paths between end-users • end-to-end, inter domain Optical networking

  13. Brainstorm... • Do I invest time in user managed bandwidth??? • How do I start: • Wait and let others do this research? • Which opportunities are there? Optical networking
