High Hopes, Long Odds • 1994 Study of Parents and Counselors • Parents wanted students to go to college but didn’t know what steps to take • Counselors could only spend 28% of their time on college counseling
Parents want their child to go on to a Postsecondary Education • In the same Partnership Center study, parents overwhelmingly wanted their child to pursue a postsecondary education regardless of income, race, or education level • But they felt they didn’t know the steps needed to get there • They were most concerned about affordability • Help them understand it is a partnership • Help them navigate the process
2011 IYI and Partnership Center conduct new study • Parent focus groups in three regions around state • Survey conducted state wide
How to take my son's interests and aptitudes and link them to specific colleges that best meet his interests and needs. He has learning disabilities that will make college a challenge. If we could get examples from other student's successes, like which schools were best at meeting the needs of special needs students. • I think that there should me more emphasis at the middle school level. We have been talking to our children about secondary education since they were very small
I have no idea where to start. I've heard of triptocollege.org but haven't looked at the website yet. I wish the schools would hold a meeting and tell us where to start gathering information for college when kids go into 7th grade or even younger • There are so many resources already out there! It's overwhelming! I need somebody to tell me which ones are the best ones
