  1. Guided Notes For Chapter 8 – 1 Changing Earth’s Surface Wearing Down and Building Up What processes wear down and build up Earth’s surface?

  2. Erosion – The process by which natural forces move weathered rock from one place to another.

  3. Sediment is the material moved by erosion.Weathering and erosion produce sediment. • .

  4. Deposition – The area where sediment is laid or deposited. Deposition changes the shape of land.

  5. Weathering, Erosion & Deposition act together to wear down and build up Earth’s surface.

  6. Mass Movement – Gravity is the force pulling rocks and other materials downhill. • Four types of Mass Movement: • LANDSLIDES • MUDSLIDES • SLUMP • CREEP

  7. Landslide – (The most destructive) When rock and soil move quickly down a steep slope. • El Salvador, 2001

  8. Landslide

  9. A Mudflow is the rapid downhill movement of a mixture of water (60%), rock and soil.
