  1. The Crucible Bellringer #7 8/22/12 • We know two pieces of info from Act I: • First of all, we know John Proctor had an affair with Abigail. • Secondly, we know that Elizabeth knows about the affair and fired Abigail. Based on what you know about John and Elizabeth’s situation, how do you think John and Elizabeth will act around one another? (Hint: What kind of relationship do you think they have?) 2. This act takes place 8 days after Act I. Predict what you think happened during those 8 days. What is the condition of Salem now? Today’s Target: I can identify words and phrases that impact meaning and tone.

  2. The Crucible Bellringer #8 8/23/12 • Give one example from Act II that demonstrates the distant/awkward relationship between Elizabeth and John Proctor. • Why do people “part like the seas” (193) when Abigail walks by? • What new information makes Elizabeth angry with John Proctor? • Why is John Proctor hesitant to go to Salem and tell the court what Abigail told him? Today’s Target: I can identify words and phrases that impact meaning and tone.

  3. The Crucible Bellringer #9 8/24/12 • Reverend Hale’s appearance at the Proctor’s house is a surprise. What does his appearance there mean? • What commandment does Proctor forget? Explain the irony of him forgetting this commandment. • Explain Reverend Hale’s statement, “Theology, sir, is a fortress; no crack in a fortress may be accounted small” (199). Today’s Target: I can identify words and phrases that impact meaning and tone.

  4. The Crucible Bellringer #10 8/27/12 • On what charge was Rebecca Nurse arrested? • On what charge was Martha Corey arrested? • Explain how Abigail was able to set Elizabeth up for murder. • After Elizabeth has been taken away to jail, what does John Proctor command Mary Warren to do? • Why is Mary Warren afraid to do what he asks? Today’s Target: I can identify words and phrases that impact meaning and tone.

  5. The Crucible Bellringer #11 8/29/12 • What happened at the end of Act II? • Make a prediction about what will happen in this act. Take into consideration how Act II ended. What is going to happen in Act III? Today’s Target: I can identify words and phrases that impact meaning and tone.

  6. The Crucible Bellringer #12 8/30/12 1. What does Giles accuse Mr. Putnam of in the beginning of Act III? 2. When Danforth gives John Proctor the offer to keep Elizabeth alive for a year, why does John refuse his offer? 3. Explain what is ironic about the following statement Danforth makes: “No uncorrupted man may fear this court, Mr. Hale! None!” (215) Today’s Target: I can identify words and phrases that impact meaning and tone and explain my thought process in writing.

  7. The Crucible Bellringer #13 8/31/12 • Abigail to Danforth: “Think you be so mighty that the power of Hell may not turn your wits? Beware of it.” (219) What does this quote show about Abigail? • What claim does Proctor make to prove that he is not lying about the affair? (220) • What is ironic about Elizabeth saying that John Proctor did NOT have an affair with Abigail? (222) Today’s Target: I can identify words and phrases that impact meaning and tone and explain my thought process in writing.

  8. The Crucible Bellringer #149/4/12 • When Mary Warren feels the pressure from Abigail and the girls and from Judge Danforth at the end of Act III, what does she do? • What does Proctor mean by the statement, “God is dead” (226)? • What does Reverend Hale do at the end of Act III? What does this show about him? Today’s Target: I can identify examples of irony and explain why those examples are ironic.
