ISN 56 Continued Write a 3-5 sentence summary about the problems of the mission presidio system • What was the purpose of the mission presidio system? • Spain build missions to stack claim to land. • The presidio was to protect the missions from invading Native Americans and also the other European explorers • Spain used the mission to spread their beliefs of Catholics to the Native Americans • Spanish settlers were sent to the mission to teach the Native Americans the language of Spanish and the ways of the Spanish culture.

ISN 56 Continued Explain why • What were the greatest problems faced by the mission – presidio system? • Problems with the Mission – Presidio System • Disease: many illnesses came from the Europeans and Native Americans were not able to fight it off and there were no vaccinations • Rejections: Many Native Americans did not like the idea of Europeans teaching them who and what and how to worship • Use: Not only were the missions used to convert Native Americans but they were also used as a safe refuge for Native Americans who were in fear of other tribes. • Many Spanish soldiers were not paid well for protecting the missions, and they had to buy their own supplies • The relationship between the soldiers and the friars was not good
