  1. California Environmental Resources Evaluation System Internet Accessible Geospatial Resources and Services http://www.ceres.ca.gov/

  2. CERES Background • Started in 1995 by California Resources Agency • Conceived and fostered by Gary Darling • Developed in partnership with the California Geographic Information Association • Make environmental information easy to find and use • Early focus on geospatial data • Recognized the importance of supporting local government land use planning

  3. www.ceres.ca.gov

  4. Environmental Data Search Engine CERES web crawler Spatially Enabled Data Discovery & Navigation Tool GeoFinder Digital Atlas California Digital Conservation Atlas (CDCA) Metadata Catalog California Environmental Information Catalog (CEIC) Geospatial Library California Spatial Information Library (CaSIL) CERES Geospatial Services

  5. California Spatial Information Library (CaSIL) • No cost, web accessible repository of raster and vector geospatial data • Over 2 Terabytes and growing • More than 45 TB of data downloaded since July 2002 • Average daily download of 38 GB • Estimated value of just the Digital Orthophoto Quarter Quads delivered to clients is about $1.44M http://gis.ca.gov/

  6. Frequently accessed data sets Digital orthophoto quadrangles Digital raster graphics (scanned USGS topographic maps) Landsat-7 images 1998-2000 SPOTView panchromatic satellite imagery CaSIL Data Content

  7. CaSIL Data Example

  8. CaSIL “Theme Mapper” You can take a look at most CaSIL data prior to downloading… CaSIL has basic map viewing

  9. CaSIL Map ViewerData Choices

  10. CaSIL Imagery Acquisition Coordination Service CaSIL provides a site where you can register your imagery project to help you find partners… http://gis.ca.gov/planned/ 16 projects currently listed

  11. California Environmental Information Catalog (CEIC) • On-line service for cataloging and finding environmental information resources including spatial data • Contains 5,166 Datasets in 210 collections, contributed by 192 organizations • Available to all and used by… • Cities • Counties • State and federal agencies • Academic institutions • Nonprofit organizations • Consultants, and others http://gis.ca.gov/catalog/

  12. CEIC Contributors Private For Profit Federal Utilities Collaboratives 0% 3% 4% 6% Cities Private Nonprofit 29% 7% Counties 10% 11% 17% Academic Institutions Regional Government 13% State Agencies

  13. CEIC Facts • CEIC stores “metadata” not the data itself • Metadata is information that describes a resource: • What type of data it is (e.g. digital image, hard copy report, etc.) • Who created it and for what purpose • How to obtain it (e.g. file download, mail hard copy) • Much more • CEIC uses the Content Standard for Digital Geospatial Metadata (FGDC-STD-001 June 1998) commonly called the “FGDC metadata standard”

  14. CEIC as Part of a National Partnership CEIC is a node of the National Spatial Data Infrastructure (NSDI). The Geospatial Data Clearinghouse is a collection of over 250 spatial data servers, that have digital geographic data primarily for use in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), image processing systems, and other modeling software. These data collections can be searched through a single interface based on their descriptions, or "metadata."

  15. It’s easy to enter data into CEIC… You can enter information directly into CEIC using our on-line data entry forms, an offline catalog application, or… …if you already have your own metadata catalog, you can make your data available for harvesting by CERES over the Internet. CERES data, in turn, are pushed up to GOS

  16. Example of a CEIC metadata catalog record… • Who • What • When • Where • Why

  17. Searches can be done by document type or format, geography or spatial extent, organization or keywords derived from a thesaurus.

  18. California Digital Conservation Atlas • First deployed in 2003 to help conservation planning • Based on data from CaSIL and third parties • In process of being upgraded using improved web browser from California Fish & Game http://atlas.resources.ca.gov/

  19. California Digital Conservation Atlas • Select from data representing… • Environmental Hazards • Jurisdictions • Plans • Projects • Biodiversity • Hydrology • Physical Geography • Demographics • Land Ownership • Land Cover/Use • Roads • Base map

  20. GeoFinderThe newest addition to theCERES tool chest Find Data View & Link to Common Data Find Relationships Between Geographies Data Discovery & Navigation using a Spatial Gazetteer Get Help

  21. GeoFinderSpatial Gazetteer GeoFinder uses predefined geographies to search for and locate associated data…

  22. GeoFinderUses a “drill down” paradigm…

  23. GeoFinderLink geography to data… Once an area of interest is identified… …associated data can be found

  24. GeoFinderIntegration with CaSIL The final step is to download the four quarter quads that make up the single 7.5’ quad from either one of two CaSIL mirrors, one in Sacramento and one in Davis

  25. GeoFinder Access data services from partner sites…
