  4. Are grants the way to go? • What will it cost in time, effort and $? • Probability of winning? • Likely partners? • Other sources of funding easier to get?

  5. Selecting Partners • You need to select a business partner. • A foundation needs to make an investment. • Can you find a match?

  6. Research First • Missions match? • Similar projects funded? • Geographic match? • Grant request in line with history? • Logical fit? • Guidelines manageable?

  9. Start With Who You Know • Current grants • Past applications & responses • Expired grants • Unsolicited donations from family foundations • Board Members • Use connections carefully

  10. Communication Before • Invitations to attend events • Contact preferences - phone – email - LOI • Encourage site visits • Respond immediately to questions/requests

  11. Preparing the Application • Follow the Guidelines • Give yourself enough time

  16. Before you send it • Check your math • Check your statistics • Make certain your narrative and attachments match • Updateyour references • Clean Attachments • Proofread EVERYTHING

  19. Submitting the Application • Be on time – not too early or late • Follow the guideline • to staple, clip, or bind… • Once Submitted – • Verify receipt with a call • Ask for time frame • Be patient but diligent in follow up

  20. What The Funder Will Do • Log in the application • Review executive summary for fit • Select those that match the mission • Further review, requests and check references – including other funders, web sites, similar organizations, etc. • Assess viability • Make decisions

  21. The Response • If Yes – Thank everyone! • If No – Thank everyone! • Ask for feedback • Don’t take it personally • Consider this a continuous learning process

  22. Communication After • Nurture Relationship • Encourage Site visit • Invitations to events, • Reporting • Recognition • Renewal

  23. Reporting • Plan for the report from the start • Understand clearly what is required • Give them what they want • Be accurate • Be on time

  24. Asking for More • Understand the ground rules • Don’t let the Renewal be your first communication since you cashed the check • Highlight the fact that you were previously funded in the application • Be on time

  28. Plan Ahead Rushed deadlines… lead to errors and failed efforts

  29. Renewals Late renewals indicate: poor planning and/or lack of interest

  30. New Organization & Starting From Scratch? Be creative in assembling the information required… and in positioning yourself as well qualified while… minimizing the risk you represent.

  31. How to select a Grant Writer? • Needs to be able to work closely with internal contacts • Needs to quickly assimilate the mission and passion and be able to articulate it • Diligent in follow up and tracking • Fit your budget
