4B – Special Endings. í simo / í sima ito / ita. In English, we often use very, most or extremely in front of an adjective. The equivilant in Spanish, add the endings directly on to the adjective: – í simo / - í sima.

  2. In English, we often use very, most or extremely in front of an adjective. The equivilant in Spanish, add the endings directly on to the adjective: –ísimo / - ísima

  3. For adjectives ending in a vowel, drop the vowel and add: • ísimo • ísima • ísimos • ísimas

  4. guapo – guap • guapísimo • guapísima • guapísimos • guapísimas • very, extremely good-looking

  5. sincero • sincerísimo • sincerísima • sincerísimos • sincerísimas • very, extremely sincere

  6. contento • contentísimo • contentísima • contentísimos • contentísimas • very, extremely happy

  7. mucho • muchísimo • muchísima • muchísimos • muchísimas • very, extremely much

  8. grande • grandísimo • grandísima • grandísimos • grandísimas • very, extremely big

  9. alto • altísimo • altísima • altísimos • altísimas • very, extremely tall

  10. rápido • rapidísimo • rapidísima • rapidísimos • rapidísimas • very, extremely fast The accent mark shifts from the “a” to the “i”.

  11. exception - amable • amabilísimo • amabilísima • amabilísimos • amabilísimas • very, extremely kind The –ble changes to –bil before adding –ísimo, etc.

  12. terrible • terribilísimo • terribilísima • terribilísimos • terribilísimas • very, extremely terrible Again, the –ble changes to –bil before adding –ísimo, etc.

  13. For adjectives ending in a consonant, simply add: • ísimo • ísima • ísimos • ísimas

  15. ideal • idealísimo • idealísima • idealísimos • idealísimas • very, extremely ideal

  16. difícil • dificilísimo • dificilísima • dificilísimos • dificilísimas • very, extremely difficult Again, shift the accent to the “i”

  17. fácil • facilísimo • facilísima • facilísimos • facilísimas • very, extremely easy

  18. Los exámenes eran difíciles. The tests were difficult. Los exámenes eran dificilísimos. The tests were extremely difficult. Make sure you drop the “es” of difíciles before adding “ísimos”.

  19. Notice the spelling changes that occur: • c  qu • g gu • z c

  20. cqurico • ricísimo – INCORRECT because the “c” has an “s” sound. • riquísimo – now you have the “k” sound. • riquísima • riquísimos • riquísimas • very, extremely rich

  21. cqucómico • comicísimo – INCORRECT because the “c” has an “s” sound. • comiquísimo – now you have the “k” sound. • comiquísima • comiquísimos • comiquísimas • very, extremely funny • Again, the accent shift

  22. ggulargo • largísimo – INCORRECT the “g” has an “h” sound. • larguísimo – now you have the “g” sound. • larguísima • larguísimos • larguísimas • very, extremely long

  23. czfelíz • felizísimo – INCORRECT because you may not use a “z” in front of an “e” or “i” • felicísimo • felicísima • felicísimos • felicísimas • very, extremely happy • Notice the accent again

  24. czferóz • ferozísimo – INCORRECT because you may not use a “z” in front of an “e” or “i” • ferocísimo • ferocísima • ferocísimos • ferocísimas • very, extremely ferocious • Notice the accent again

  25. Nouns can have endings to show small size or to express affection.

  26. For nouns ending in a vowel: • -ito • -ita • -itos • -itas

  28. abuelo • abuelito • abuelita • abuelitos • abuelitas • dear grandpa, grandma, etc..

  29. For nouns ending in a consonant, simply add: • -cito • -cita • -citos • -citas

  30. león • leoncito • leoncita • leoncitos • leoncitas • little lion drop the accent completely

  31. ratón • ratoncito • ratoncita • ratoncitos • ratoncitas • little rat

  32. exception: animal • animalito – (not animalcito)

  33. illo illa illos illas ico ica icos icas uelo uela uelos uelas These vary from country to country, and person to person. Some other less common endings include:
