  2. The English Civil War- Colonies Choose Sides • Fought between the puritan controlled Parliament & King • King Charles I lost • King beheaded • Country run by Oliver Cromwell

  3. The Colonies Choose Sides • Maryland- support King • Maryland Protestant rebelled • Pass Maryland Toleration Act- gave religious freedom in Maryland- to protect Catholics

  4. Colonization Resumes • Cromwell died in 1658 • Monarchy restored (Charles II)- Restoration • Colonization resumes • New colonies supported by king, not private business

  5. New York-- New Amsterdam • 1609- Dutch East India Company hire Henry Hudson to find Northwest Passage- Hudson River • Dutch start colony- New Amsterdam (Manhattan Island) • To grow colony, Dutch allow anyone to buy land and settle • People from many countries came

  6. New York • When Charles II restored he decides to take New Amsterdam • Grants land (including New Amsterdam) to his brother- James • James, Duke of York, send warships to take the land • Renamed it New York

  7. New Jersey • James gave part of the land to 2 advisors • Named after island of Jersey • Offered land, religious freedom and elections to settlers

  8. Pennsylvania & Delaware- William Penn • King owes $ to Penn family • William Penn asks Charles II for land to settle debt • Quaker Colony

  9. Quakers • Pacifists • Against taxes, military service • Rejected political & religious authority

  10. The “Holy Experiment” • Colony named Pennsylvania (Penn’s wood) • Religious freedom • N. Am. treated fairly • Suffrage given to all Christians that owned 50 acres • Land made available for new colonists • Caused it to grow rapidly

  11. Delaware • Penn bought 3 counties from Duke of York • Eventually became Delaware

  12. New Southern Colonies- Carolina • Given to Charles II allies • Divide into North & South Carolina • North Carolina- scattered population • South Carolina- good harbor- Charles Town (Charleston)

  13. Georgia • 1720- people imprisoned in Eng. because of debts • James Oglethorpe -start a colony to help debtors/prisoners • King George II want to get rid of poor • Also wants buffer between Spanish FL and Carolina

  14. Georgia • Oglethorpe settles on Savannah R. • No slavery or alcohol • 1751, becomes a royal colony (all bans lifted)

  15. England’s American Colonies • By 1775, England colonies had large, growing population • Colonies were successful • Had self government, land ownership, religious freedom • seed of the American Revolution
