  1. Universal Design for Learning (UDL) “..an educational approach to curriculum and instruction using technology to enable students with diverse learning needs to be successful…”

  2. Assistive Technology • If an Idea is delivered digitally, it’s accessible. • If type is enlarged, it’s legible. • If written words speak, they’re decipherable • If symbols are added to sentences, they’re readable. • If videos have captions, they’re watchable. • If the text is foreign, it’s translatable. All students are digital kids. Digital kids are in control. Control is motivating, and personal. Personal choice equals access. If it is DIGITAL it is ACCESSIBLE!

  3. Technology Solutions Department • 7 Occupational Therapists • 4 Speech Therapists • 2 Physical Therapists • 1 Coordinator • 1 Director

  4. Technology Solutions Responsibilities • Evaluate students for access to augmentative communication devices (VOCA’s) • Evaluate students for technologies that allow them to access educational curriculum (computers, software, writing aides) • Perform re-evaluations on an as needed basis to determine appropriate use of assistive technology • Provide training and support to students, staff, and parents to ensure successful use of assistive technology

  5. Technology Solutions Activity

  6. Positive Steps Toward UDL Design

  7. Fragmentation • Limited classroom integration of available technological hardware & software • Limited resources to train educators on computer hardware & educational software • Limited awareness of the importance of UDL design amongst Principals and AP’s • Limited resources (time) for collaboration of existing D75 teams, including Technology Solutions, Technology & District Coaches, & Related Service Supervisors

  8. Positive News! • The expertise in D75 exists to create a UDL model

  9. Plan of Action • By the direction of District 75, in addition to evaluating students for IEP mandated technology, the Technology Solutions team will work with chosen schools to utilize existing resources to develop UDL directives • District 75 will be provided with quarterly reports including required resources and outlining progress of chosen schools in meeting UDL directives • Members from the Technology team will collaborate with chosen professionals in September 2012 to outline UDL directives set-up under the direction of District 75 • Information on successful District 75 UDL model classrooms will be highlighted in appropriate D75 meetings, including Principal & Parent conferences
