  3. INTRODUCTION • BIO - DIESEL is the name for a variety of esters based Oxygenated fuels made from vegetable oils or animal fats. • Bio - diesel has physical properties, which are very similar to conventional Diesel. • Most of the vegetable oils and animal fats contain triglycerides, which on simple processing give fatty acid esters called "Bio – Diesel” • The chemical reaction involving a lower alcohol (Ethanol and Methanol), producing glycerol as a co-product is called Trans-Esterification. Transesterification is a simple reaction, which gives quantitative yields at ambient temperature and pressure and does not require any special processing equipment. • Bio-diesel made from virgin or used vegetable oils (both edible and non-edible) and animal fats, behaves just like petroleum diesel. Bio-diesel operated combustion engine require very little or no engine modifications. Bio-diesel can be blended in any ratio with Petroleum diesel. It can be stored just like the petroleum diesel and does not require any special infrastructure. • The use of Bio-diesel in conventional diesel engines results in substantial reduction of unburnt hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide and particulate matters. • Bio-diesel is considered as a clean fuel since it has almost no sulphur, no aromatics and has about 10% built in Oxygen, which helps it to burn fully. • The suggested plant capacity is 50000 liters per day of Bio-diesel production on three-shift basis. • With explosive growth in energy requirement in industries and fuel requirements for commercial vehicles, marketing of the product will not face any problem at all. • The plant will operate under all safety norms.

  5. PLANT CAPACITY • Bio-Diesel production from Non Edible Vegetable Oils (USED COOKING OIL). • BASIS: 24Hrs, 300 Working Days / Annum. • Raw Material Storage: 500000 Ltrs • Chemical Storage: 200000 Kgs • Boiler Capacity: 5 Tons / Hr • Production Capacity: 50000 Ltrs / Day of Bio-Diesel. • Bio-Diesel Storage: 500000 Ltrs • Lab Equipments and Testing Apparatus. • Diesel Generator set : 250 KVA

  6. MANUFACTURING PROCESS • The process of production of Bio - diesel involves trans-etherification reactions similar to saponification in soap making. To make soap we take trans-fatty acid or triglyceride and blend it with a solution of sodium Hydroxide and water. • In trans-esterification, lye and methanol are mixed to create Sodium Methoxide. When Sodium Methoxide is mixed with waste vegetable oil, the strong polar-banded chemical breaks the trans-fatty acid into glycerin and ester chains. • The ester formed is bio-diesel, which is methyl ester. It would be ethyl esters if reacted with Ethanol instead of Methanol. • Free Fatty Acid levels in non-edible vegetable will be in the range of 4% to 8%depending on the oil source. Vegetable oils containing less than 2% free fatty acids can be directly trans-etherified to bio-diesel. • However oils containing freer fatty acid levels can be converted to bio-diesel in two-stage operation. In the first stage, free fatty acids can be directly converted to FAME using an acid catalyst, thus reducing the free fatty acid level in the oil. • In the second stage Triglycerides in the oil can be converted to ester using an alkali catalyzed reaction. Thus guaranteed process yield of up to 90 to 95% can be achieved.
