19. Menstruation (Having periods)

Menstruation • Estrogen and progesterone prepare the lining of the uterus for pregnancy • If pregnancy does not occur, this lining is shed (removed) • Lining made up of blood & tissue • Passes from uterus through cervix & vagina to outside of body • Tampons (inserted in vagina) & sanitary pads (attached on underwear) absorb blood & tissue • Process repeats about once a month to create this new lining • If pregnancy occurs (the fertilized egg implants in the uterine lining), a period does not occur

22. Important Definitions • Vaginal Intercourse – when a man’s penis is placed inside a woman’s vagina; often referred to as sexual intercourse. • Ovulation – when the ovary releases an egg • Ejaculation – when a man releases semen (the fluid containing sperm) from his penis

26. Where it All Starts • The egg and the sperm each have 23 chromosomes. When they unite a fertilized egg is formed with 46 chromosomes (23 pairs) • All eggs contain an “X” chromosome • Sperm can contain either an “X” or a “Y” • Girls are XX: X from mom, X from dad • Boys are XY: X from mom, Y from dad • The sperm determines the sex of a baby

Let’s Review How a Female Gets Pregnant • Ovulation (egg released by ovary) must occur • Vaginal intercourse with ejaculation (sperm released in vagina) around the time of ovulation • Egg & sperm have to unite in fallopian tube (fertilization) • Fertilized egg has to implant in the uterus (implantation)

38. Consequences for Children of Teen Parents • Far more likely to be physically abused, abandoned, or neglected • Perform much worse in school • Daughters more likely to become teenage moms • Sons more likely to be imprisoned
