  4. 30,000 BCE – 1st inhabitation of Japan • Mainly hunters and gatherers until 300 BCE when farming developed. • Nara Period – 710-784 AD – emergence of Imperial Japan • 1/3 of the Japanese population was killed by Smallpox during this period. • Samurai Warriors evolved between 794-1185 AD History 1

  5. 1185: Minamoto no Yoritomo named the 1st Shogun of Japan – Imperial Emperor • Series of Shoguns followed him. • A Feudal System developed during this time, in which Samurai and wealthy were in total control. History 2

  6. 1467-c.1560: Sengoku Period of warring states • 1500s: Jesuits and traders from Europe arrive in Japan • 1590s: Japanese Shoguns attempt to invade Korea and Ming China, but fail and are defeated. • March 31, 1854: US “Black Ships” force Japan to begin trading with the West. • US & European Powers attempted to Control Japan • 1868-1912: Meiji Restoration: Imperial Japan reemerges .   8. Early 20th Century: Taisho Democracy • WWI: Japan is an Ally of the US • 1936: Sign Anti-Cominterm Pact • 1940: Joins the Axis Powers in WWII (Germany and Italy) History 5

  9. Dec. 7, 1941: Japan bombs US Naval Base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii • At war with the US and the other Allies throughout the Pacific Theatre • WWII ends in 1945 when President Harry S. Truman of the US ordered the Atomic Bombing of Japan • Most of Hiroshima and Nagasaki are destroyed WWII

  10. August 15, 1945: Japan Surrenders • Treaty of San Francisco creates a new constitution with democratic ideals in 1952 • Japan was the 2nd largest economy in the world after the US until they were passed by China in 2010. After WWII
