EVIDENCE OF EVOLUTION

SB5c. Explain how fossil and biochemical evidence support the theory

What is evolution

What is Evolution?

  • Change in the genetic composition of a population over time.

What evidence do scientists have that evolution has occurred

http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/evolution/educators/teachstuds/unit3.html

What evidence do scientists have that evolution has occurred?

1. Fossils

  • Found in sedimentary rock layers (strata)

  • Fossils found deeper very different from fossils found closer to surface

  • Fossils found deeper are older-relative dating

  • A fossil’s carbon14 can be measured to determine actual age- radiometric dating

  • Fossils have revealed changes in organisms over time and provide clues to changes in climate.

What evidence do we have that evolution has occurred

What evidence do we have that evolution has occurred?

2. Homology- Similarity in characteristics of different species resulting from common ancestor

a. Homologous structures- structures that may have different functions but have similar structure

What evidence do we have that evolution has occurred1

What evidence do we have that evolution has occurred?

b. Vestigial structures- structures that are reduced & have no function.

What evidence do we have that evolution has occurred2

What evidence do we have that evolution has occurred?

c. Molecular homology- similar DNA sequences indicate close relationships

What evidence do we have that evolution has occurred3

What evidence do we have that evolution has occurred?

d. Embryological evidence- embryo development similar, may indicate close relationship

What evidence do we have that evolution has occurred4

What evidence do we have that evolution has occurred?

  • Biogeography

    • Geographic distribution of species

    • Island species are similar to mainland species

    • EX: Darwin’s finches are similar to birds on South Americam Continent.
