C) ROMAN EMPEROR 1.1 Galen & 4 Humours 2000BC Ancient Greece • Julius Caesar was important … • He was protected by the Church, as he supported the idea of a Creator. • Offered a complete whole-body explanation for disease and treatment • Galen was the basis for Doctor’s training for 1,000 years. • His books were re-discovered during the Crusades. Galen was a Greek doctor, who studied in Egypt and returned to Greece in 157 where he was appointed physician to the gladiators. In AD 162 Galen went to Rome to become a doctor to the Emperor. He wrote over 300 medical books. Galen created the Theory of Opposites – treating ‘hot’ disease like fevers with cold baths and drinks, and a cold with chillies or heat.
