  1. “Treatment as Prevention” (TasP) in a country with high ART coverage – The Namibia example R. Kamwi1, N. Hamunime1, M. Odiit2, J. Gweshe1, A. Muadinohamba1, E. Shihepo1, H. Van Renterghem2, A. 2. TasP Namibia • Broad objective • To make an informed decision if the country is to adapt Treatment as a Prevention Strategy (TasP) If a decision is taken to adopt strategies of EITHER a combination of all HIV+ Pregnant Women (PW) & HIV/TB co-infected (TB) & Sero-Discordant Couples (SDC) OR CD4 95% <500 OR CD4 95% <500 & 50% >500, then there will be an additional >14,000 new infections averted, > 4,800 deaths averted, > 25,000 Life-Years gained and >420,000 DALYs averted.

  3. TasP Namibia The cost per death averted or life year gained would be least for the strategy CD4 95%<500 and while the cost per infection averted is not very different by strategy. In Namibia, ART coverage has reached high levels and incidence has declined rapidly in the past decade. Increased ART coverage will mean increased investment in ART in the short term (4 years) but will translate to: Fewer new infections; Fewer deaths; Reduced cost per death averted and; Increased life years gained in the longer term (23 years).
