  1. MODIS Data Product Distribution from the Goddard Earth Sciences (GES) Distributed Active Archive Center (DAAC) Darryl Nickless Darryl.Nickless@gsfc.nasa.gov

  2. MODIS Data Access Methods Overview • GES DAAC Search and Order Interface (a.k.a. WHOM) • MODIS Multiple Data Ordering Page • EOS Data Gateway (EDG) • Data Pool • Command-line FTP access • WHOM for Data Pool • Terra and Aqua Orbit Tracks • GES DAAC MODIS Archive Volume • GES DAAC MODIS Data Distribution Statistics • Please note that there are click-by-click ordering tutorials • (PPT format) on the MODIS tutorial CDs (available in the lobby).

  3. Before ordering any data: • select the Earth Science Data Types (ESDTs) from MODIS that meet your needs. • With this information, you can easily begin the data search and order process. • If you need any assistance selecting the data, please send your questions to: modis@daac.gsfc.nasa.gov • Useful links regarding MODIS data can be found on the MDST web site: http://daac.gsfc.nasa.gov/MODIS/

  4. http://daac.gsfc.nasa.gov/MODIS/data_access.shtml

  5. GES DAAC Search and Order Interface (a.k.a. WHOM) • MODIS Multiple Data Ordering Page • Data Pool (FTP and WHOM for Data Pool) Atmosphere Ocean Radiometric/Geolocation 2000 … ESDT MODIS/Terra MODIS/Aqua Other DAAC data Atmosphere Ocean Radiometric/Geolocation 2002 … ESDT • EOS Data Gateway (EDG) Dynamic Search for any NASA ESE Data Results based on search criteria

  6. GES DAAC Search and Order (a.k.a. WHOM)http://daac.gsfc.nasa.gov/data/

  7. Select year 2001

  8. After you place your order and it is successfully processed by the GES DAAC, you will receive a delivery notice email like this one that explains where/how to pick up your data. This email will have contact information for the User Services group in case you have any questions.

  9. Subsetting Ocean Data • Ocean Level 2 Parameter Subsetting (WHOM) • -Gets the native HDF file from the archive, extracts • the parameters you request, and merges all of them together in a new HDF file with the geolocation information • Ocean Level 3 Parameter Subsetting (WHOM, MDOP, EDG, Data Pool) • -Does not do any manipulation to files • Ocean Level 3 Spatial Subsetting (WHOM for Data Pool) • -Option to subset by predefined geographical region

  10. WHOM -- MODIS Ocean Level 2 Parameter Subsetting MODIS Terra Ocean Level 2 Subsetting Product -This is on-demand parameter subset of MODOCL2, MODOCL2A, MODOCL2B and MOD28L2

  11. The available granules are displayed Geolocation Data inserted into output Select the parameters for each data product -MODOCL2 -MODOCL2A -MODOCL2B -MOD28L2 Select “Add Selections to Order”

  12. MODIS Multiple Data Ordering Page (MDOP)http://daac.gsfc.nasa.gov/daac-bin/MODIS/Data_order.pl?PRINT=1

  13. Can change platforms – select Aqua or Terra Make Spatial Selection first You can type in the coordinates or use a map to select the area Multiple Product Selection from Radiometric/Geolocation, Atmosphere and Ocean. Temporal Selection Option to filter data by Quality Attributes When you are ready, Click the “Start Search” Button Additional Utilities to assist in your search Level 3 and 4 Ocean Products -Select “Level 3 & 4” button

  14. MDOP Level 3 Mapped and Binned Ocean Data Review Definitions Spatial Resolution Selection Map Type Selection Level 3 Ocean Color and SST Parameters = Parameter subsetting Time Average Selection If you want Binned products, you need to check the box Enter your selection and begin to search for granules

  15. MDOP Level 4 Mapped and Binned Ocean Data Level 4 Mapped Products Section Select for Definitions Level 4 Ocean Primary Parameters Spatial Resolution Selection Statistical Yearly Mapped Semi-Analytic, 8-days Mapped Enter your selection and begin to search for granules Semi-Analytic, Yearly Mapped

  16. Data Pool ftp://g0dps01u.ecs.nasa.gov/ MDST 11/22/2002

  17. WHOM for Data Pool http://daac.gsfc.nasa.gov/data/datapool/

  18. Data Pool offers a sample browse Image of the data product for users To view Download files by right clicking with your mouse and saving to your disk. You can select many files and don’t have to complete an order

  19. WHOM for Data Pool -- MODIS Ocean Level 3 Spatial Subsetting (only available for data on the Data Pool) The available data for your selections will be displayed. You can further subset your data by geographical region, this is Spatial Subsetting. Then click the ‘Submit’ button to proceed

  20. MODIS Terra and Aqua Satellite Predicted Passes MODIS Terra for 11/16/2002 MODIS Aqua for 11/16/2002 Information on the Terra and Aqua satellite orbital track can be found on http://www.ssec.wisc.edu/datacenter/terra/ and on http://www.ssec.wisc.edu/datacenter/aqua/ Images courtesy University of Wisconsin SSEC Data Center

  21. GES DAAC Archive Statistics • As of 8/1/2003 for both MODIS/Terra and MODIS/Aqua: • There were 15,704,804 MODIS granules available for public ordering • Those granules have a total volume of 1,268,628 gigabytes

  22. GES DAAC Distribution Statistics • As of 8/1/2003 for both MODIS/Terra and MODIS/Aqua: • The GES DAAC has filled 612,279 requests from 3,294 unique users of MODIS Data (Science Team subscriptions for the data are not counted here) • Those requests were for a total of 1,931,252 granules, which have a total volume of 179,112 gigabytes

  23. Please send any questions you may have to: modis@daac.gsfc.nasa.gov Useful links regarding MODIS data can be found on the MODIS Data Support Team (MDST) web site: http://daac.gsfc.nasa.gov/MODIS/
