  3. Right place • Physical ~appropriate facilities, materials, Exeter, Devonport, Derriford & Truro • Cultural~ values ~ attitudes and role models ~ reflection and enquiry ~ learning culture

  4. Right Time • Spiral curriculum~ increasing complexity each year • Case based learning. • Contextualised learning ~ aids recall • Clinical supervisors encourage students to question and reflect on care they provide as soon after the event as possible

  5. Right Student • Mature entry at degree level or equivalent. • Student selection ~ recruit on the immutable’s, train the skills ~ structured interviews based on scenarios • Right learning environment ~ encourage reflection and questioning ~ PDS is a learning organisation.

  6. Right Result • Use of appropriate standards~ set by negotiation • Train to standards • Record of outcomes of each patient visit ~ Form K ~ reviewed with tutors • Reflective practice ~ develop insight • Audit results

  7. Standards • ADEE & FGDP(UK) standards. • Developed in partnership ~ academic, CS’s, students. • Taught in Simulated Dental Learning Environment (phantom head) • Practised on clinic – overseen by Clinical Supervisors ~ results recorded on Form K

Form K • Modification of Birmingham rating system • Categories ~ • Competent : - able to complete task independently • Learner: -Completed task , needed help & assistance • N.I.R.: - needed immediate remediation on clinic • Observer: -Assisted in provision of treatment • Remediation: - needs formal remediation

  9. Quality Assurance • Clinical supervisors are pivotal • Work to agreed standards ~ which students are taught • Standards on intranet ~ available to all • Train supervisors to the standards • Monitoring of standards ~ students, staff • Regular review and refinement • GDC

  10. Overview Monitoring on clinic - FORM K – audits, student passports

  11. Summary • Select students carefully. • Set clear standards • Train students and staff • Monitor standards • Reflect & improve.
