  1. The Miracles of JesusLesson 5: The Healing of the Demoniac Mark 1:21-28; Luke 4:31-37

  2. The City of Capernaum Located on the Northwest shore of the Sea of Galilee, Capernaum was visited often by Jesus. (Matthew 4:13; 11:23)

  3. Aerial view of Capernaum

  4. The Synagogue of Capernaum The synagogue pictured here was built in the 2nd century A.D. on top of the earlier synagogue. Benches on which the elders sat lined the inside wall. The doors face Jerusalem and the worshipers prayed in that direction.

  5. Teaching in Synagogues Synagogues would typically possess several scrolls of Old Testament Books, particularly the Torah (Pentateuch), the Prophets and the Psalms. The scroll pictured here is the great Isaiah scroll found in a cave near the dead sea. It predates the time of Jesus and was probably in use during his lifetime.

  6. The Synagogue of Capernaum • Jesus entered the synagogue on the Sabbath and taught (Mark 1:21) • This was His customary practice (Luke 4:16, 31) • The people were astonished at His teaching because He taught with authority (Mark 1:22; Luke 4:32; cf. John 17:2-3)

  7. Demon Possession • The terms “demons,” “devils” and “unclean spirits” are used interchangeably (Matthew 8:28; Mark 5:1-2; Luke 4:33) • The devil has “angels” that do his work, and they will suffer his punishment (Matthew 12:22-29; 25:41). • Demons do not possess people today – they ceased when prophecy ceased (Zechariah 13:1-2; 1 Corinthians 13:8). • However, demons are still active servants of Satan (1 Timothy 4:1).

  8. The Healing of a DemoniacMark 1:21-28; Luke 4:31-37 • The demon recognized Jesus (1:24) (1 John 3:8; James 2:19) • Jesus muzzled the demon with His rebuke (1:25) • The demon convulsed the man, threw him in the midst of the gathering, and came out. • The result was that people were amazed, and Jesus’ fame spread throughout the region.

  9. Lessons to Learn from the Healing of the Demoniac • The power of Jesus is far greater than the power of the devil. • His authority to teach is backed up by the exhibition of His authority over a demon! • As God’s children we are able to overcome the evil spirits of false doctrine because our Lord is greater than Satan (1 John 4:4) • Once Satan’s evil influence has been cast out of our lives, we should fill our lives with the things of the Lord to prevent Satan from returning (Matthew 12:43-45; Ephesians 4:26-32)
