  1. Lab Safety What should you do if you do not understand a direction or a part of a lab procedure? A student goes into the laboratory and helps himself to a beaker and some chemicals. Is that okay? Why or why not? Is it okay to use beakers to drink from? A student is curious about what would happen if you mix the blue substance that the teacher left on the table with the liquid which is also on the table. What should the student do? What could happen if a student attempts to perform a lab without preparing in advance for the lab? Are practical jokes permitted in the laboratory? What materials should be at your lab station? Where is the eyewash station in this lab?

  2. Answers • What should you do if you do not understand a direction or a part of a lab procedure? Ask the teacher. A mistake could harm you, or cause the experiment to not work.

  3. 2. A student goes into the laboratory and helps himself to a beaker and some chemicals. Is that okay? Why or why not? • The student doesn’t know what the chemicals could do. He could be putting everyone in the building in jeopardy.

  4. 3. Is it okay to use beakers to drink from?4. A student is curious about what would happen if you mix the blue substance that the teacher left on the table with the liquid which is also on the table. What should the student do? • Of course it isn’t okay to drink from the beaker, there could be residual (left over) chemicals. • Ask the teacher. Actually doing the experiment will get you detentions at best, injury at worst.

  5. 5. What could happen if a student attempts to perform a lab without preparing in advance for the lab?6. Are practical jokes permitted in the laboratory? 5. Accidents can happen – like the one I described where a classmate caught fire. 6. Practical jokes, or any horseplay is strictly prohibited in the lab. There is too great a probability that someone will be hurt.

  6. 7. What materials should be at your lab station?8. Where is the eyewash station in this lab? 7. Only those materials necessary for the lab should be at your lab station. The lab station should be kept as clean and uncluttered as possible. 8. The eyewash is next to the door, by the safety shower, fire blanket, safety shower , goggles cabinet and aprons.
