  1. Professional Theatre in Context Outcome 3: Evaluating the effectiveness of two contrasting professional theatrical productions.

  2. Step 1: Select the key design elements you will discuss • Staging • Performance Space • Set • Lighting • Costume • Sound • Properties • FOH

  3. Step 2: • Make a point evaluating the effectiveness of each design element • Give examples to support your analysis (PEA) • “Using avenue staging was effective because it allowed the director to create intimate moments but it also had the effect of making us feel uncomfortably close to the action, reminding us just how must danger the characters are required to face from day to day. Another benefit to this type of staging is that we could clearly see the audience opposite and witness their reactions. This created a sense of community and shared empathy for the characters, as we witness their struggle to carry on when a life is lost”

  4. Step 3: Evaluate the effectiveness of 2 actors and their performances in each of the productions • Voice • Movement • Relationships • Audience Interaction • Impact

  5. Step 4:Evaluate the effectiveness of 2 actors and their performances in each of the productions • Make points for each character on the aspects listed on the previous slide. • Give evidence to support your points. (PEA) • “Theseus conveyed his power as the Duke effectively by using upright posture, focused eye contact which conveyed his status over other characters. His authoritative tone also showed that he was in control and an important character.”

  6. Step 5:Describe and explain the effectiveness of the director’s artistic interpretations in both theatrical productions • Intended message • Style/Genre • Presentation of themes • Contemporary References • Form • Period

  7. Step 6: • Make points explaining the effectiveness of each of the aspects above, in each production • Give evidence to support your point (PEA) • “The intended message of A Midsummer Night’s Dream was that it is important and valid to dream because when we dream we find escapism and relief as well as finding another perspective on our problems which can renew our passion for life.”
