  1. Grants Management: School Based Development

  2. Whois Grants Management? Okay…lets face it…the Grants Management Department is essentially me…but it sounds pretty impressive, don’t you think? Although I am a department of 1 I do work closely with the Business Administration office (particularly Sue Tower) on the financial aspects of my job, and Kelli Pines at NECC kindly writes my POs for me.

  3. What is Grants Management? There are 2 main components of my job…Grants and Projects (funded by grants). Grants Projects • Search for new grants • Research grants • Write grants • Write/submit reports • Create and manage grant budgets • Implement w/fidelity • Develop projects based on school & community needs • Write programs to meet project requirements • Direct grant-funded programs • Collect and analyze data before, during & after project/program implementation

  4. What Grants Management Can Do for You I Can… • Help search for grants to meet your project needs • Identify grant requirements • Uncover support data • Write the proposal • Develop a budget/write budget narrative • Manage grant funds • Prepare and submit reports to the grantor

  5. What Grants Management Can Do for You You Will Need to Help With… • Identifying the need for your proposed project • Designing the project elements • Outlining project objectives, activities, & outcomes • Assessing project effectiveness • Identifying the funding needed and its allocation • Reviewing the proposal prior to submission • Committing to its implementation if awarded

  6. For Example… Your students are struggling with a concept that is traditionally difficult to grasp. Because they need to think in complexways to understand and internalized the problem they really need to “do” the problem in a practical sense instead of just learning its theory. Inspiration hits!! You get a great idea for a project that will give them a hands on experience that will really involve them in their learning. Problem…

  7. Example Continued… ….Your project will need funding So what do you do? You call me! You tell me about your project and what you want it to accomplish and I will search for funding sources. When I find one I’ll share it with you. If we decide it’s a good fit I will move forward with researching and writing the proposal for the grant. During this process I will be communicating with you so I can write a winning proposal & feasible budget….which means you will have to get back to me promptly since these things have set in stone time limits.

  8. Example Continued… Once the grant proposal is ready for submission we will review it together to make sure that it accurately reflects the project you intended and what you are able and willing to implement if it is awarded. * This is really important. If you are awarded the grant you must follow-through on it by implementing it with fidelity to the proposed project.

  9. Example Continued… Lets say you were awarded funds for your project Yay!! Now the real work begins (this is also the fun part)! You will need to implement the project and keep any records that the grantor may require for reporting. You will also need to let me know what you’d like to purchase within the terms of the grant. I will manage the budget and write and submit the reports.

  10. One More Important Thing… If you’ve been awarded a grant, and are investing the time to implement the project it funds, people should know about it! Never underestimate the power of promotion! Take pictures, keep examples of students work, and write a couple of paragraphs about what you and your students are accomplishing. And then get it out there! If you aren’t sure how (or aren’t comfortable doing it) give your information to me and I will be happy to toot your horn for you!

  11. Are You Interested? If so … • Send me an email: herwin@newfane.wnyric.org • Give me a call: 778-6394 • Stop by my office: Elementary School • Set up a meeting with me to talk more about it!
