An ADJECTIVE modifies a noun or a pronoun.

There are two main ways that adjectives can be used, as PREDICATE ADJECTIVES and as MODIFYING ADJECTIIVES.

PREDICATE ADJECTIVES

  • Predicate adjectives are adjectives that are used after linking verbs.
  • Almost all predicate adjectives can also be used as modifying adjectives.

Predicate ADJECTIVES

MODIFYING ADJECTIVES

Examples:

It is a hot day.

It is a frightened cat.

They were noisy children.

It was strange soup.

He had a crooked tie.

Examples:

The day was hot.

The cat is frightened.

Some children were noisy.

The soup tasted strange.

His tie seemed crooked.

PREDICATE ADJECTIVES

  • A useful test for recognizing predicate adjectives is to put VERY (or quite) in front of the suspected adjective.
  • If the word really is a predicate adjective, it will still be a correct sentence.

Example:

The day was hot.

The day was VERY hot.

PREDICATE ADJECTIVES

  • The very test is particularly useful for distinguishing predicate adjectives from certain verb forms.

Example:

The children were working.

The children were very working

PREDICATE ADJECTIVES

  • Nearly all predicate adjectives can also occur in a comparative and superlative form
  • Comparative either adds “-er” or more to the base form of eth adjective
  • Superlative adds either “-est” or most to the base

  • On the back of your Adjective practice worksheet:
    • Write TEN sentences
    • Each sentence MUST have a predicate adjective
    • Underline/circle the predicate adjective in each sentence.
