  2. LEGAL OVERVIEW The Fire & Rescue Services Role Inspect & ensure that means of escape and associated fire safety measures are provided for all people who may be in a building, and that both are adequate and reasonable, taking into account the circumstances of each particular site.

  3. LEGAL OVERVIEW The Person(s) controlling the BuildingUnder current fire safety legislation the responsible person must provide a fire risk assessment which includes an emergency evacuation plan for all people likely to be in the premises, including disabled people, and how that plan will be implemented.

  4. SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES • Fire Risk Assessment • Evacuation Plan for ALL • Personal Emergency Evacuation Plan • Standard Evacuation Plan • Fire Awareness / Marshal Training • Maintenance of Fire Safety Equipment • Emergency Evacuation Drills

  5. EVACUATION PLAN - CONSIDER • Staff / public users in premises • Wheel chair user / Mobility impaired • Asthma & other breathing / health issues • Hearing impaired • Visually impaired • Dyslexic / orientation disorders • Learning difficulty / mental health problems • Dexterity problems

  6. WHAT IS A FIRE MARSHAL A person nominated to implement certain fire safety measures. This will include assisting people to evacuate in the event of fire. It may also include other vital fire safety roles. The number of Marshals will depend on the size and use of the premises. One will normally be required on each floor or in each department on each floor.

  7. DUTIES OF A FIRE MARSHAL • Assist in safe and full evacuation • Spot fire risks and assess fire safety • Implement the fire routine and fire drill • Sweep search of pre arranged area • Ensure the availability of escape routes • First aid fire fighting where trained

  8. HOW TO DO A SWEEP SEARCH • Start in the area closest to the fire • Work towards the exit – never away from it • Check all areas for people, paying particular attention to toilets, bedrooms etc • Remain calm but persuasive with people • Close all doors and windows behind you if safe to do so • Report to Fire Manager area cleared

  10. OTHER FIRE MARSHAL DUTIES • Knowledge of Emergency Procedures • Test plans & procedures at regular drills • Practice emergency procedures • Review emergency procedure effectiveness • Role play scenarios in public areas • Grab pack & visitors book
